TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Historians have ranked former Sen. Bob Dole among the 25 most “Notable Kansans” of all time. Now, the Russell native will be the first person to have his legacy set in bronze on the new Walk of Honor on the Statehouse grounds.
Gov. Sam Brownback says Dole and his wife, Elizabeth, plan to attend a ceremony Sept. 30 as the bronze plaque is unveiled. The Walk of Honor will recognize people with significant Kansas connections who have contributed to the state and the nation.
Dole entered politics after a long recovery from wounds he suffered in World War II. He served in the Kansas Legislature and both chambers of Congress, rising to the post of Senate majority leader. He was the Republican nominee for president in 1996 but lost to incumbent Democrat Bill Clinton.
