On Monday, the Barton County Commission accepted the resignation of Carolyn Crone as the Liberty Township Treasurer. After the resignation was accepted, Crone had something to say. She said she did not intend to resign at their last Township meeting. The issue came up when Liberty Township leaders suggested taking some of the Treasurer’s responsibilities and distributing them to Adams, Brown, Beran, and Ball Accounting Firm. Crone said she was upset that her voice wasn’t being heard at the township meeting, and she was so frustrated, she said “I’m done. That’s it.” But she said that she meant she was done with the meeting, not done with the position of Treasurer.
Kevin Rose is a Trustee of Liberty Township, and he clarified that their intentions were not to eliminate the Treasurers position with the township, but to have Adams, Brown, Beran, and Ball assist the Treasurer’s office with record keeping. Rose said that Crone told them that if they chose to transfer some of her duties to the accounting firm that she would resign. He said she had also been compensating herself for those duties, and the township had decided to be paid the same without extra compensation. Rose said that Crone said if they took away that extra compensation she would resign. Rose said they went through with both the transfer of duties and the dock of pay, and he took that as her resignation.
County Administrator Richard Boeckman and County Clerk Donna Zimmerman were both in attendance at the Township meeting, and they agreed with Rose’s testimony. Commissioner Jennifer Schartz said that she though it was a Township matter, and that they handled it as they saw fit.
