TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – The Kansas Department of Insurance says insurance claims for property and crop damage have far surpassed the previous record of $700 million set nearly 20 years ago.
Total claims so far this year have passed the $1 billion mark, with only about $18 million of that attributed to crop damage.
The department says more than half of this year’s claims stem from wind and hail storms in the east and south-central parts of the state in April.
The Wichita Eagle reports this year’s estimate stems from 197,000 claims, far fewer than the 365,500 claims registered in 1992 when the previous record was set.
Flood losses aren’t included in the figures.
