Cowley Knocks Off 6th Ranked Cougar Soccer Team

In a battle for the top spot in the Jayhawk Conference standings, Cowley College shocked the No. 6 ranked Barton Community College men’s soccer team in a 2-1 victory in Arkansas City.  Tied at 0-0 at halftime Cowley quickly scored just two and a half minutes into the second half.  The Cougars responded with a Fabio Priore de Almeida goal just a minute later to tie the score.  Cowley would get the game clincher with fourteen minutes to play and thus send the Cougars home with a rare conference defeat.

In the women’s game, Barton  won their third straight game by defeating Cowley College 2-1.   Trailing 1-0 at halftime Barton quickly evened the score just 1:38 into the second half on a Jessica Rosenberg goal coming from a Monica McCarthy assist.  The game appeared heading into extra play until Rachel Ukena scored Barton’s game winning goal with only 4:06 left on the clock.  The Lady Cougars remain in 4th place in the conference standings at 5-3 while improving their overall record to 6-6 on the season.

Both Men and Women’s teams return home Saturday to face Independence.  The Lady Cougars play at 2:00 p.m. with the men to follow at 4:00 p.m.
