The Shawnee County District Attorney’s decision to stop prosecuting misdemeanor cases in Topeka, particularly domestic battery cases, continues to spark criticism.

The Kansas coordinator of the National Organization for Women on Thursday told the Shawnee County Commission that she was outraged over the decision.

The Topeka Capital Journal reports that District Attorney Chad Taylor said in August that budget cuts had forced him to stop prosecuting misdemeanors in Topeka. He said the Topeka city attorney should prosecute the cases. The city says it doesn’t have the money to do that.

NOW executive Kari Ann Rinker urged the commission to meet with the Topeka City Council and Taylor to fix the problem.

She says the commission and Taylor need to compromise and work out a way to protect Topeka women.
