Great Bend Continues To Search For Solution to Algae Problem In Veterans Lake

Great Bend officials hope a webinar will help them find answers to the ongoing problem of toxic algae that continues to affect Veterans Lake.  Last week, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment announced that Veteran’s Lake is the only lake in Kansas that is currently under a warning for high levels of blue-green algae.  All other lakes affected in the state have been downgraded to an advisory.

The webinar will take place on Thursday and city officials hope to find answers to the problem that has affected the lake the past two years.  The city of Great Bend will soon begin an education campaign to inform residents of the city how they can avoid contributing to the algae problem.  The City Council has also discussed the idea of performing a study  on storm water flow into the lake to help determine exactly where the nutrients that feed the algae are entering the lake.

Human Resource Director Terry Hoff says they will report back to the Council and an upcoming meeting of what they were able to learn from Thursday’s webinar.
