Memorial Service Planned For Emporia State Students Killed In Fire

EMPORIA, Kan. (AP) – Emporia State University has scheduled a memorial service for two students killed last week by a fire in their off-campus apartment.

The service will take place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Albert Taylor Hall on the Emporia State campus.

Authorities have said 23-year-old Yawai Fan and 22-year-old Zheng Lin died Oct. 20 when items lying on the grate of a floor furnace ignited in their duplex.

Both came to Emporia State from China in the fall semester of 2009. Fan was a sophomore studying for his chemistry degree. Lin was studying for her master’s degree in the Department of English, Modern Languages and Journalism.

The university says both students’ families will attend Thursday night’s memorial.
