13-Year Old In Trouble After Stealing Truck

EMPORIA, Kan. (AP) – A 13-year-old Kansas girl faces numerous charges after authorities say she led deputies on a chase through two counties in a stolen truck.

The Lyon County Sheriff tells The Emporia Gazette the chase began shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday and ended when the pickup hit a Coffey County sheriff’s car in a field.

He says the Emporia girl suffered only a sore wrist in the wreck.

The chase began when Lyon County deputies noticed the pickup swerving on Interstate 35. Officers tried to stop the pickup on Kansas 130, but the driver took off at speeds ranging up to 80 miles per hour.

The sheriff says the pickup had been stolen in Emporia.

Larned City Council Approves Contract for Sale of Armory Building

Earlier this week, the Larned City Council met, with the potential sale of the old armory building being one of the topics of discussion. The Council had already selected Heartland Irrigation out of Moundridge as the buyer of the facility, who designs and sells field crop irrigation systems. Lane Massey is the City Manager of Larned.

MASSEY-OF THAT PROPERTY by Matt Unruh

Massey said the paperwork and the title work for the property will take another 30 days, and Heartland Irrigation and the City still have to take care of some zoning issues, but he anticipates that they will take ownership of the building within the next 30 to 60 days.

MASSEY-IRRIGATION SYSTEMS by Matt Unruh

The City of Larned sold the armory building to Heartland Irrigation for 250,000 dollars. The City of Larned opted to sell the old Armory Building, after the National Guard vacated the facility and turned the ownership over to the City in March of 2010.

No Decision Concerning Kansas Public Pension System

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback and officials of the state’s public pension system aren’t saying publicly whether they favor issuing bonds to help close a close a long-term funding gap.

A study commission is considering whether the state should issue up to $5 billion in bonds. The panel expects to make a recommendation by the end of the year.

The Kansas Public Employees Retirement System projects an $8.3 billion gap between anticipated revenues and benefits promised to retirees, teachers and government employees through 2033.

Brownback hasn’t been shy about pushing to move toward a 401(k)-style plan for new workers. But spokeswoman Sherriene Jones-Sontag says Brownback will wait to see what the commission decides on bonds.

KPERS spokeswoman Kristen Basso says the pension system sees it as an issue for legislators to settle.

Heckler Removed During Lecture At K-State

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Riley County police removed a man who was creating a disturbance from Sen. Alan Simpson’s Landon Lecture at Kansas State University.

KMAN reports that the man started to speak loudly with security while Simpson was lecturing Wednesday at McCain auditorium. The man then reportedly tried to interrupt Simpson, who was responding to a question. He was then carried from the auditorium.

Simpson, who is co-chairman of the Deficit Commission, was speaking about efforts to reduce the nation’s budget deficit.
