Doctor’s Say They’ll Challenge Revised Abortion Regulations In Court

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Attorneys for three doctors say they’ll challenge revised regulations for abortion providers in Kansas.

The attorneys said Thursday that a legal challenge in federal court is coming despite recent changes meant to placate the physicians, who’ve already persuaded a federal judge to block the earlier version of the rules.

The New York-based Center for Reproductive Rights says it will sue. It represents Dr. Herbert Hodes and his daughter, Dr. Traci Nauser, who perform abortions at their medical office in the Kansas City suburb of Overland Park.

Later, Cheryl Pilate, an attorney representing Dr. Ronald Yeomans, said he’d also be involved. Yeomans performs abortions at a Kansas City, Kansas clinic.

The attorneys said that even though the state backed off some requirements, the rules remain burdensome and unreasonable.

6 Cases Of Whooping Cough Reported In Douglas County

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Health officials in a northeast Kansas county are dealing with an outbreak of whooping cough.

Station 6News Lawrence reports that Douglas County officials have recorded a half-dozen cases of the illness in Lawrence during the past month. Four of the cases involved children who had not been vaccinated for whooping cough, also known as pertussis.

The bacterial illness is contagious and spreads by coughing or sneezing in close contact with others.

A pertussis outbreak in March affected seven Lawrence children, most of them unvaccinated. Symptoms of whooping cough include a runny nose or congestion, sneezing and possibly a mild cough or fever. Very young children
may have rapid, violent coughing.

Beasley Suit Alleges Improper Benefits At K-State

Minnesota Timberwolves forward Michael Beasley says in a lawsuit that his former agent gave him and his mother improper benefits during his one season at Kansas State.

Beasley filed a countersuit in a Maryland a month ago in response to agent Joel Bell’s wrongful termination lawsuit against him. Beasley says Bell conspired with Beasley’s AAU coach to forge a relationship with the star from the time he was 14 years old in hopes of cashing in on that relationship when Beasley went to the NBA.

Beasley says Bell gave his mother living expenses and paid for her move to Manhattan, Kan., when he went to school there, which would likely violate NCAA rules.

The allegations were first reported by The Washington Post.

Thomas Robinson Injured In Practice

Kansas junior forward Thomas Robinson hyperextended his left knee at practice Thursday, KU coach Bill Self said Thursday night.   According to head coach Bill Self, results from an MRI were negative and expects Robinson will take a couple of days off from practice and hopefully not miss any significant time.

Robinson, an All-America candidate this season, averaged 7.6 points and 6.4 rebounds last season. Robinson had surgery last season to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. Kansas plays an exhibition game at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Pittsburg State in Allen Fieldhouse.

Man with Great Bend Connections one of seven people arrested for Human Trafficking

59-year-old David Walter was arrested for Online Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking in Wichita on Saturday. He was listed to be a resident of Hays, but as the Public Information Officer with the Wichita Police Department Lieutenant Doug Nulte says, he has connections to Great Bend as well. He said he gave several addresses located outside of Wichita, including Great Bend and Hays. Nulte said charges are still pending, and detectives have yet to charge him.

Walter was arrested, along with 6 other Wichita-area residents, as part of a human trafficking sting last weekend, involving the FBI, the Internet Crimes Against Children task force, the Wichita and Sedgwick County Exploited and Missing Child Unit, Wichita police and Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.
