Wildcat Offensive Line Helps Fuel K-State

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Much of the credit for Kansas State’s unbeaten start has fallen on the shoulders of Bill Snyder, and for good reason. The 72-year-old coach has made all the right calls this season. But quite a bit of the success can be traced to the offensive line, too.

Those big guys up front have paved the way for quarterback Collin Klein to rush for 14 touchdowns, and two players to average nearly 100 yards rushing per game. The result is a 7-0 start and a big showdown against 11th-ranked Oklahoma on Saturday.

Snyder praised the offensive linemen earlier this week, and said the job they’ve done eliminating mistakes has been just as important as anything else for the Wildcats’ success.

Kansas Panel Mulls Changes To Public Pension System

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – A commission agreed Wednesday to consider proposing that Kansas start a 401(k)-style pension plan for new teachers and government workers. But members also expect to mull over a less aggressive alternative that creates such a plan only for higher-wage employees.

The pension study commission also promised to discuss other ideas for improving the future financial stability of Kansas’ public pension system. The possibilities include issuing up to $5 billion in bonds to close a long-term gap in the system’s funding and additional increases in the state’s contributions to retirement benefits.

Kansas’ Governor Sam Brownback tells the Associated Press the state can’t sustain its current pension system, known as “defined benefit” because benefits are guaranteed up front, regardless of the system’s revenues and investment earnings.

Hate Crimes The Topic Of A Wichita Forum

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – Officials with the U.S. Justice Department will join community groups in leading a Wichita forum on hate crimes next week.

The forum is intended to acquaint the public with the justice system and learn how to recognize and report a crime of hate or bias. It takes place Nov. 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wichita’s First Metropolitan Community Church.

Host groups include the Center for Human Rights, Wichita Pride Inc., The Transgender Coalition, That Gay Group, Kansas Equality Coalition and the Peace and Social Justice Center.

Community groups approached Rita Valenciano, a conciliation specialist with the Justice Department, to hold a forum in Wichita similar to one she helped lead in Lawrence.

Missing Baby’s Brothers To Be Questioned Again

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Kansas City police say they plan to re-interview the two older brothers of a Kansas City baby who disappeared three weeks ago.

Police told The Kansas City Star that a specialist trained in interviewing children will talk to Lisa Irwin’s brothers Friday.

Police say Irwin’s parents have not allowed the boys to be interviewed since Oct. 4, the day they reported their 10-month-old daughter missing.

Police have not discussed their investigation into the child’s disappearance but have said they have no suspects.

The boys are ages 5 and 8. They were reportedly in the home when the baby was reported missing. They are Deborah Bradley and Jeremy Irwin’s children from previous relationships.

Police says they also plan to take cotton swab DNA samples from the boys.

No Go For Kansas Arts Funding

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – The Kansas Arts Commission is absorbing a setback from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Kansas Public Radio reports  the NEA told the state commission this week not to bother applying for federal
matching funds next year. That National Endowment says the private  donations Kansas is now counting on to support the arts don’t qualify for the federal match.

Kansas was cut off by the NEA this year after Gov. Sam Brownback abolished the Arts Commission as a state agency and created a foundation to raise private donations.

The NEA later asked Kansas to submit a new proposal that could qualify the state for federal funding next year. The commission was preparing to do just that by an Oct. 31 deadline when it learned of the NEA’s new position.

Barton Volleyball Wraps Up Regular Season By Sweeping Seward County

Facing the possibility of a letdown due to wrapping up the Jayhawk West Division title on Monday, the Barton Community College volleyball team took care of business Wednesday at the Kirkman Center by sweeping Seward County  25-19, 25-17, and 25-20.  The Lady Cougars, who earned the top seed in next week’s Region VI Championships, finish the regular season at 13-1 in conference play and 25-11 overall while Seward will take the third seed with a 9-5 conference record and 21-14 overall.

The Lady Cougars will open its defense of the Region VI Championship on Tuesday, November 1, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Barton Gym against an opponent yet to be determined.  The night will give special recognition to the sophomore members of the team and will also be the season openers for the Cougar basketball teams as both take on Bethany JV.   The Lady Cougar basketball team, under first year head coach Darin Spence, will tip-off at 4:00 p.m. while the Cougar men will tip off at approximately 8:00 p.m. or thirty minutes following the completion of the volleyball match.  Admission is free but fans are asked to bring items for care packages to be sent to American troops in Afghanistan.  For a complete list of items please visit the Barton Sports website.

BREAKING NEWS: Jury Trial Date Scheduled for Accused Murderer Adam Longoria

Barton County District Judge Hannelore Kitts has scheduled a jury trial for Adam Longoria, the man accused of killing 14-year-old Great Bend resident Alicia DeBolt. Ron Keefover is the Spokesman for Kansas Judiciary Court. He said a 10-day Jury Trial for Adam Longoria has been scheduled for March 26th, 2012.

Jurors will be selected for the trial on March 26th, 2012 as part of the 10-day trial. The jury trial is scheduled to be held in Barton County District Court. Keefover said there will be a motions hearing before the actual jury trial on March 26th, but no motion hearing has been scheduled at this time.

Longoria is charged with Capital Murder, but the Kansas Attorney General’s office, the prosecution in the case, say they will not seek the death penalty, meaning if Longoria is convicted, he would face a sentence of life in prison without parole.
