Equipment Malfunction Causes Power Outage in Northeast Great Bend on Wednesday

Parts of Northeast Great Bend felt the effects of a short power outage Wednesday morning. Mark Kircher is the Area Supervisor for Wheatland Electric. He said the power outage happened at breaker 28 at bypass sub-station, with a bad cut-out on a compositor bank that opened the breaker at the sub-station, due to the decay of the equipment.

Kircher said the power outage affected the area between Main Street and the 281 Bypass, and between 24th street and 10th street in Great Bend, effecting nearly 700 customers. The power went out at 9:04am Wednesday morning, lasting 10 minutes before Wheatland Electric crews restored power.

Stafford County Parolee Accused Of Threatening The President

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – A Kansas man accused of threatening President Barack Obama will have a psychological examination.

U.S. District Judge J. Thomas Marten ordered the exam Monday for Michael Scott Ramsey, of Hutchinson. Ramsey will be evaluated for his ability to understand the charges and to properly assist in his defense.

Federal prosecutors requested the exam, and Ramsey’s public defender did not oppose it.

Ramsey was indicted in July on charges of threatening to kill or harm the president in 2009 and again this year.

He was sentenced last month to 3 1/2 years in prison for taking an electronic monitoring device off his ankle last year while on parole in a Stafford County drug case.

New Pitching Coach In Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Royals have hired Dave Eiland as their new pitching coach.

Eiland spent the past season as special assistant to Tampa Bay Rays general manager Andrew Friedman, but prior to that served three seasons as the New York Yankees’ pitching coach. He  takes over for Bob McClure, who was let go after five seasons with the Royals.

Royals manager Ned Yost said last month that he wanted a pitching coach who had spent a long time in the major leagues with “mediocre stuff,” meaning that person had to make the most of what he had to stay in the big leagues.

Yost got that in Eiland, who went 12-27 with a 5.74 ERA while appearing in 92 games over 10 seasons with the Yankees, Padres and Rays.

Suicidal Man Dies After Closing I-70 In Kansas

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – A suicidal man who forced the closing of Interstate 70 near Manhattan after releasing dangerous chemicals in his car has died.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports the man has been identified as a 20-year-old resident of Lawrence. The newspaper says the man died Tuesday at a hospital in Wichita, where he was flown after being decontaminated.

Riley County police and the Kansas Highway Patrol say the man called 911 late Monday asking for a suicide hotline. The call was traced to the side of I-70 near Manhattan.

Officers located the man, but the man told them to stay back because of the chemicals. After several hours of negotiations, a police robot was sent to the vehicle and found the man unresponsive.

The interstate was reopened just after 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Transportation Secretary Will Leave Post In December

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Kansas Department of Transportation Secretary Deb Miller is leaving her post in December to take a position with a national transportation planning and policy group.

Gov. Sam Brownback announced Miller’s departure Tuesday. She will be joining Cambridge Systematics, which is headquartered in Cambridge, Mass.

She has served as KDOT secretary under the administrations of Brownback, a Republican in his first term, and Democratic Govs. Kathleen Sebelius and Mark Parkinson.

Miller was the first female to head the state transportation agency. Her last day will be Dec. 16.

She’s also the first member of Brownback administration to leave her post since he took office in January.

Miller has spent 20 years with KDOT and was involved with the development of the 1989, 1999 and 2010 comprehensive transportation programs.

Memorial Service Planned For Emporia State Students Killed In Fire

EMPORIA, Kan. (AP) – Emporia State University has scheduled a memorial service for two students killed last week by a fire in their off-campus apartment.

The service will take place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Albert Taylor Hall on the Emporia State campus.

Authorities have said 23-year-old Yawai Fan and 22-year-old Zheng Lin died Oct. 20 when items lying on the grate of a floor furnace ignited in their duplex.

Both came to Emporia State from China in the fall semester of 2009. Fan was a sophomore studying for his chemistry degree. Lin was studying for her master’s degree in the Department of English, Modern Languages and Journalism.

The university says both students’ families will attend Thursday night’s memorial.
