Barton Cougars Pick Up 7-1 Victory. On To Semi’s

The Barton Community College men’s soccer team began their quest for its third straight Region VI title today at Cougar Field by defeating Johnson County Community College 7-1 Tuesday.  The Cougars advance to the region semifinals at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday at Topeka’s Hummer Park against Cloud County Community College who recorded 3-0 shutout victory today over Pratt Community College.

Saturday’s semifinal game will be a rematch of Barton’s come-from-behind overtime 3-2 victory back on September 20 in Concordia and consequently is Cloud’s lone loss on the season.  The No. 11 nationally ranked and top-seeded T-birds have a 16-1-3 record on the season while Barton will bring a 12-7 record to the contest.  In the other semifinal contest second-seeded and nationally receiving votes Coffeyville (13-1-2) will face No. 19 and third-seeded Cowley College (12-2-2) at 6:30 p.m.

Wild Day In The World Of Conference Realignment

UNDATED – (AP) – The Big 12 has approved bringing in West Virginia to replace Missouri when the Tigers complete their move to the Southeastern Conference, a person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because neither the school nor the Big 12 had announced that its board of directors unanimously approved inviting West Virginia when Missouri’s spot comes open.

The move would allow the Big 12 to maintain 10 members and is another blow to the embattled Big East, which already has lost two members and one member-to-be in the last six weeks.

The Big East is trying to reconfigure as a 12-team football league and has been courting Boise State, Navy and Air Force as football-only members and Central Florida, SMU and Houston for all sports. Commissioner John Marinatto met with officials from some of those schools Sunday in Washington.

Since there is no timetable for Missouri to complete its expected departure from the Big 12—and the league’s board of directors announced that it expressed “a strong desire” for Missouri to stay during a Monday meeting— there is no timetable for West Virginia to receive a formal invitation, the person said.

But the school will accept an invitation once it is offered, the person said.

Big 12 Commissioner Chuck Neinas has already said he expects Missouri to compete in the Big 12 in 2012, but all signs indicate Missouri is leaving and now the conference is prepared for that.

The SEC has not publicly acknowledged interest in Missouri and Commissioner Mike Slive has said his conference was making plans to have 13 members next season, but there are scheduling problems—especially in football—that come with that number.

Great Bend Continues To Search For Solution to Algae Problem In Veterans Lake

Great Bend officials hope a webinar will help them find answers to the ongoing problem of toxic algae that continues to affect Veterans Lake.  Last week, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment announced that Veteran’s Lake is the only lake in Kansas that is currently under a warning for high levels of blue-green algae.  All other lakes affected in the state have been downgraded to an advisory.

The webinar will take place on Thursday and city officials hope to find answers to the problem that has affected the lake the past two years.  The city of Great Bend will soon begin an education campaign to inform residents of the city how they can avoid contributing to the algae problem.  The City Council has also discussed the idea of performing a study  on storm water flow into the lake to help determine exactly where the nutrients that feed the algae are entering the lake.

Human Resource Director Terry Hoff says they will report back to the Council and an upcoming meeting of what they were able to learn from Thursday’s webinar.

Demolishing A Historic Building Has Harper Man In Hot Water

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – A Kansas man facing federal charges for demolishing a historic building in downtown Harper has been granted a new trial date.

Hugh Allen Barker now faces trial Jan. 17 on a two-count indictment charging him with failing to notify environmental regulators before tearing down the building in 2008. He has pleaded not guilty and had been scheduled for trial Nov. 8.

Barker’s lawyer requested a 60-day extension to file motions and a new trial date, citing his workload and schedule. Prosecutors did not oppose it.

U.S. District Judge Monti Belot postponed the trial after Barker agreed in court Monday to the delay despite his right to a speedy trial.

The circa-1885 building was owned by The Balmer Fund, a nonprofit group that restores historic buildings in Kansas.

Kansas Oil Company Charged With Killing Migratory Birds

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – One of seven oil companies charged with killing migratory birds during drilling operations in North Dakota has agreed to plead guilty.

Slawson Exploration Co. Inc., of Wichita, Kan., was charged under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act with killing 12 birds in oil waste pits in western North Dakota from May 6 through June 20.

Under a plea deal filed in federal court Monday, Slawson will pay $12,000 to the nonprofit National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

The maximum penalty for each misdemeanor charge is six months in prison and a $15,000 fine.

U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon said he could not comment on the deal because it still must be approved by U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland in Bismarck.

Stu Kowalski, an attorney for Slawson, also declined to comment.
