Kansas Board of Education OKs No Child waiver

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – The Kansas Board of Education has approved the state’s request for a waiver from some provisions of the federal No Child Left Behind law.

Members voted Wednesday to support the waiver’s submission to the U.S. Department of Education. If granted, Kansas schools would no longer face a 2014 deadline for ensuring that 100 percent of their students perform well on state tests.

After Congress failed to change the law, President Barack Obama told states last fall they could seek a waiver around the unpopular proficiency requirements in exchange for actions his administration favors.

Kansas officials plan to submit it by February 28th, the deadline for the second round of requests. Ten states were granted waivers last week from the first round of requests.

Lyons man sentenced in rape case

LYONS – (AP) –  A 53-year-old Lyons man has been sentenced to about 27 years in prison for raping two girls between the ages of 4 and 7.

Stanley W. Points, who appeared Wednesday before District Judge Hannelore Kitts, received the 330-month sentence as part of a plea agreement. The agreement made in December removed potential Jessica’s Law penalties – life in prison without possibility of parole for 25 years – from the complaint against Points by omitting any language indicating children were involved.

Points, who was convicted of two counts of rape, was initially charged with six crimes under Jessica’s Law alleging three girls between the ages of 4 and 7 were involved, according to Rice County District Court records.

He was initially charged with aggravated indecent liberties, attempted rape and sexual exploitation of a 6- or 7-year-old girl; aggravated indecent liberties and attempted rape of a 5- or 6-year-old girl; and aggravated indecent liberties with a 4- or 5-year-old girl.

GBHS Teachers Give Tips on the ACT at Recent USD 428 School Board Meeting

Teachers from Great Bend High School attended an in-district A.C.T. Workshop, where a speaker familiar with development of the ACT spoke. They shared what they learned at Monday’s USD 428 school board meeting. Alyssa (KROGER) Kroeker is a math instructor at Great Bend High School.

KROEKER-THAT FIRST SWEEP by Matt Unruh

Kroeker learned a strategy students can use if they get stuck on a problem on the ACT.

KROEKER-WHAT SHE CALLED IT by Matt Unruh

Kroeker said when there are math questions on the ACT with figures, they are always drawn to scale so if they measure a side, it usually will be the actual length. She added that students will do better on the math section of the ACT if they at least take up to Algebra Two in High School.

Wrestling Instills Foundation Beyond Sports

From Kyle Roberts:

As we near the end of the High School wrestling season there will be several young athletes putting it on the line this week to earn a chance to compete at the State Championships. I would like to wish all those local athletes the best of luck in representing their respective schools. Many people often ask me why I love our oldest sport so much. I have come across a couple of articles this month that sum it all up. Check out Cover Ground’s article on 5 Hardest Sports to Train and Compete In; https://www.coverground.ca/2010/5-hardest-sports/ Also check out the latest Sports Illustrated, in it is an article about Mike Powell; https://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1194725/1/index.htm
This is a powerful read and hits the nail on the head for me in regards to the Wrestling Lifestyle!!

Pawnee County Caught in the Middle of Redistricting

Pawnee County is caught right in the middle of the redistricting plans in Kansas. Kim Barnes is the Legislative Spokesperson for Pawnee County, and he says that in July, the Pawnee County Commission adopted a letter asking for the entire county to be placed in one house district and one senate district. Barnes said there’s even been talk of splitting Pawnee County in the US Congressional District, putting parts of the County in the 1st and the 4th district.

BARNES-FOR REPRESENTATION by Matt Unruh

Pawnee County has been in the 36th Senate district, and Barnes said that will likely change, putting the entire county in the 33rd Senate district. He says the county was split in the Kansas House of Representatives in the last redistricting, placing the eastern half of the county is in the 114th district, while the western half is in the 117th district.

Commentary from Eagle GM Rick Nulton 2/15/12

Has the local economic tide turned?  That’s a question that may be difficult to answer in 60 seconds, however, here are a couple of positive indicators & observations.

In my opinion…the Gt. Bend Chamber of Commerce has made some excellent improvements in the last few years.  And trust me…it’s in spite of the fact I’m a board member.  Organization…communication…and what the chamber does have all improved.  For the first time in a decade…the chamber has shown positive growth in membership for 2 consecutive years.  That number is 40.  To me…that’s a sign of confidence in the economy…and in the Chamber of Commerce organization.

Another positive and you may not agree.  The My Town project was a bold move by some key individuals who put their money where their mouth is.  We refer to that as “where the rubber meets the road.”  I’d go one step further…and again you may not agree.  Had it not been for the continuing revitalization, including My Town, and forward thinking on Great Bend’s downtown…I doubt we’d be seeing a new 6 screen Cinema being built by next year.

This is progress…and progress comes with a price.  It takes belief…commitment…and money.  Please support your local businesses.

I’m Eagle g.m. Rick Nulton…thanks for listening!
