Kansas State gets 76-70 win over Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) – Rodney McGruder scored 26 points with five 3-pointers to lead Kansas State to a 76-70 win over struggling Texas A&M on Tuesday night.

Texas A&M used a 6-0 run, capped by a jump shot by Dash Harris, to cut Kansas State’s lead to 66-63 with about 3 minutes left.

McGruder responded with a 3-pointer before a layup by Harris on the other end. A put-back dunk by Jordan Henriquez and a pair of free throws by Angel Rodriguez stretched the lead to 73-65 with less than a minute remaining.

The victory gave Kansas State (20-9, 9-8 Big 12) 20 wins for the sixth straight season and 25th time in school history.

Elston Turner had 22 points for Texas A&M (13-16, 4-13), which has dropped four in a row.

Texas A&M, Mizzou to pay $24.8M to leave Big 12

IRVING, Texas (AP) – Texas A&M and Missouri have agreed to pay $12.4 million each to leave the Big 12 and join the Southeastern Conference in July. The league announced the agreements Tuesday.

Texas A&M will receive unspecified benefits from the Big 12’s new television contract with Fox Sports and “certain other concessions.” However, Missouri waived any claims to revenue from the TV deal, which takes effect in July, and agreed to pay the Big 12 another $500,000 to cover officiating expenses for 2011-12.

The Big 12 is adding TCU and West Virginia next season. The Mountaineers and the Big East settled competing lawsuits earlier this month, with the Big East receiving $20 million from the school and the Big 12 for West Virginia to join the Big 12 next football season.

Royals and LHP Duffy agree to 1-year contract

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) – The Kansas City Royals and pitcher Danny Duffy have agreed to a one-year contract for $487,750.  The team announced the move Tuesday.

The 23-year-old left-hander is expected to be a member of Kansas City’ rotation this season after going 4-8 with a 5.64 ERA in 20 starts as a rookie last year.

The Royals say every player on their 40-man roster has now agreed to a 2012 contract. The club plays its first spring training game Sunday against the Texas Rangers.

The new farm and home supply store in Hoisington should open soon. Brian Kindscher is the owner of Kindscher’s Mule Barn at 157 South Main Street in Hoisington, and he allowed the Hoisington Governing Body and other community leaders get an early look at the store on Monday. He says he’s almost ready for the general public to get a look.

KINSCHER-PRETTY WELL READY by Matt Unruh

Kindscher says he’s hired six people at the store already, and plans to hire one more employee. He says he’ll be traveling between Hoisington and Concordia for the next several months where he has run another farm and home supply store for the past eight years.

Great Bend Planning Commission Considers Conditional Use Permit for Concrete Services

On Monday night, Concrete Services requested a recommendation from the Great Bend Planning Commission to rezone their property on 2nd Street and grant a conditional use permit, so they can use a washout pit to clean out their concrete trucks on that property. The planning commission approved the rezoning recommendation, but decided to seek more information before approving the conditional use permit because of complaints from residents around the plant about dust and debris. Planning Commission Chairman, Steve Dobratz.

DOBRATZ-THE DUST PROBLEM by Matt Unruh

Dobratz said they will be asking Great Bend City Engineer Robert Winieke to attend their next Planning Commission meeting in a couple of weeks to help come up with some solutions to the dust problem. Concrete Services is no longer operating their washout pit at their 2nd Street location. The Planning Commission only advises the Great Bend City Council on issues like this, and the decision on the permit will ultimately be made by the City Council.

Lawrence won’t allow chicken slaughter for art

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Chickens that were to be publicly slaughtered as part of an art project in Lawrence have been spared.

City officials told artist Amber Hansen that the slaughter would violate animal cruelty ordinances.

Hansen originally planned to display coops of chickens at various locations around Lawrence. The chickens were to be publicly slaughtered and served as a meal. She says the intention is to draw attention to the process of slaughtering animals.

Assistant City Attorney Chad Sublet told Hansen a public slaughtering of chickens would violate city codes. And even keeping the chickens on private land would require her to meet other city codes on animal care.

Hansen told the Lawrence Journal-World that she’ll change the public art event, rather than fight the city’s decision.

Man ordered to trial in death of wife’s caretaker

OLATHE, Kan. (AP) – An Olathe man will stand trial for first-degree murder in the death of his wife’s live-in caretaker.

Fifty-nine-year-old Stephen M. Collier was ordered Monday to stand trial in the December death of 54-year-old Susanne Goslin.

Collier pleaded not guilty. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 6.

Goslin, a registered nurse, died from a gunshot wound to the head. She had been hired to care for Collier’s wife at their home in Olathe.

The Kansas City Star reports Collier’s wife found Goslin’s body Dec. 28. She testified at the preliminary hearing that she saw her husband with a gun in his hand that day and that he fired a shot into the floor.

Collier did not testify during the hearing.

Collier is being held on $750,000 bond.
