Barton hires Avila to lead women’s soccer program

Barton Community College recently approved the hiring of Aaron Avila as head coach for the women’s soccer program.  Avila comes to Barton from Tyler, Texas, where he was the assistant coach for the Tyler Junior College men’s soccer team.  Avila was recently hired to replace Shawn Uhlenhake, who accepted the Western Texas College Head Men’s and Women’s Soccer coach position last month.

“Aaron brings to Barton an array of experience at all levels of soccer,” Trevor Rolfs, Barton Athletic Director said. “From a highly successful playing career, to recently being on staff at one of the premier junior college soccer programs in the nation, I feel Aaron will elevate our women’s soccer program here at Barton to levels unseen since its inception.  I am extremely excited about the future of women’s soccer here at Barton!”

Joining the staff at Tyler in January 2011, Avila helped lead the Apaches to a third place national finish, as well as, coached a 2nd Team NJCAA Division I All-American and had two players on the NSCAA/Continental Tire Junior College Division I All-America Team.

Prior to Tyler, Avila coached both the boys and girls teams at West Jones High School in Laurel, Mississippi. In his four years as the head coach of the girls and three years as the head coach of the boys, Avila guided West Jones girls to four division championships, two south state championships, and one state championship.  On the boys side he led them to three division championships.  For his efforts Avila was named the 2008 MAC girls coach of the year and was chosen as the MAC South All-Star team head coach for the boys.

Before leading the West Jones teams, Avila began his coaching career at Jones County Junior College where he led the men’s team to the program’s first South Division title and appearance in the Mississippi state championship.

A native of El Progreso, Honduras, Avila played collegiate soccer at Meridian Community College where he was a member of their 2000 national championship team.  He then continued his career at Mississippi College to earn his bachelor degree in mathematics while also earning ASC All-conference honors.

Avila was also an accomplished high school athlete as he was selected team captain, named the team’s Most Valuable Player for three years, was selected as the District Most Valuable Player, and earned All-State honors.

Avila also has earned coaching credentials by obtaining the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Premier diploma, NSCAA Level 2 Goalkeeping Diploma, and a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) National C License.

Galena mayor holds robbery suspect at gunpoint

GALENA, Kan. (AP) – Galena Mayor Dale Oglesby doesn’t take kindly to trespassers on his property. Early Wednesday, Oglesby saw someone near a storage building at his home. He grabbed his 9 mm semi-automatic handgun and held the man at gunpoint until police arrived.

Police say the suspect had two motors from oil field equipment that belonged to Oglesby when the mayor stopped him. The man was booked at the Cherokee County Jail on suspicion of theft and criminal trespass. Police say he might have had an accomplice but that person has not been caught.

The Joplin Globe reports the confrontation came just hours after Police Chief Larry Delmont gave a presentation to the Galena City Council on an increase in scrap metal and battery thefts in the town.

A 737-200 Cargo Plane Landed in Great Bend to Refuel Thursday

Thursday, the largest aircraft landed at Great Bend Municipal Airport since then-Senator Bob Dole stopped in Great Bend in the 1980’s in a 727. A 737-200 Cargo flew into Great Bend from Merced, California to refuel on its way to Columbus, Indiana. Pilot Fred Sorensen explained why they decided to stop in Great Bend.

SORENSEN-THAT’S WHY WE’RE HERE by Matt Unruh

They filled up 1,500 gallons worth of fuel in Great Bend, costing 6,500 dollars. Sorensen said they will stop in Great Bend again when they take the plane back to Hawaii where it will be used to ship cargo to different islands in the Pacific. They plan to buy 5,000 gallons worth of fuel when they come back to Great Bend in about a month-and-a-half.

Fuller Brush Company Files Bankruptcy

Fuller Brush Co. is filing for bankruptcy protection, more than a century after its fleet of salesmen popularized door-to-door selling in the U.S. The 106-year-old company with 180 employees expects to cut costs and discontinue some unprofitable products to emerge a leaner, more profitable company. Fuller Brush’s assets and debts each amount to $10 million to $50 million. The company, based in in Great Bend, Kan., sells personal care and household cleaning products directly and through retailers such as Byerly’s and Home Depot. Private equity firm Buckingham Capital Partners bought the company from CPAC Inc. in 1997. It is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.

Bill honoring Frankfort soldiers goes to governor

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – A bill to honor 37 servicemen from a small northeast Kansas town who died in World War II is headed to Gov. Sam Brownback for his signature.

The Kansas Senate on Wednesday passed the bill, which was approved earlier by the House. It would name part of Kansas Highway 99 “The Frankfort Boys World War II Memorial Highway.”

Frank Benteman, a Frankfort native and WWII veteran who pushed the honor, says Frankfort had more men killed in action in World War II than any other town its size.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that American Legion Post No. 181 in Frankfort has raised about $2,200 of the roughly $3,000 needed to pay for the Frankfort Boys signs and for their upkeep.

Kansas man seeks new trial in Horton woman’s death

ATCHISON, Kan. (AP) – A Sabetha man convicted of capital murder in the death of a rural Horton woman is seeking a new trial.

An attorney for 60-year-old Roger Hollister says he deserves a new trial because the Atchison County judge who heard his case did not properly instruct jurors.

Hollister is serving life in prison with no chance of parole for the November 2009 death of 58-year-old Patricia Kimmi.

Hollister’s attorney argued in a court motion that evidence presented in the trial was insufficient, errors were made in closing arguments and other errors deprived Hollister of a fair trial.

The St. Joseph News-Press reports that the Atchison County attorney said Wednesday he would file a response to the motion within 30 days or request an extension.
