            Catherine Rose Hazen, age 86 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away at the Kansas Medical Center inAndover, Kansas on Saturday evening, November 24, 2012 after a brief illness.  Catherine was born on January 31, 1926 at Ellsworth, Kansas to Henry Rudolph and Martha Lena (Herber) Nienke.  She was united in marriage to Bernard “Buck” George Hazen on August 16, 1944 at his parents’ home in Erie, Kansas. To this union two children were born, Kenneth Ray and Brenda Sue. The couple lived in Holyrood, Pratt, Russell, and St. John, Kansas prior to moving to Great Bend in 1981.  Catherine was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Great Bend, and also a member of the VFW Auxiliary of Great Bend. She and her husband Buck spent time touring the country on a motorcycle and RVing in Texas andArizona.  Buck preceded her in death in 2008.  Catherine enjoyed bingo and dancing, and loved family gatherings and spending precious time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include one son, Kenneth Ray (and his wife, Nancy) Hazen of Cunningham, Kansas and one daughter, Brenda Sue (and her husband, Arlon R.) Johnson of Great Bend, Kansas; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  Catherine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bernard “Buck” George Hazen on February 5, 2008, and one sister, Doris Wimmer.

            Funeral Services will be held at ­­­­10:00 A.M. on Thursday, November 29, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend, Kansas with Pastor James A. Strasen officiating.  Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in ruralBarton County, Kansas.  Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday at Charter Funerals in Great Bend, Kansas, and then at the church on Thursday from 9:00 to 9:50 AM.  There will be a Service of Memories at 7:00 PM on Wednesday at the funeral home.  The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Trinity Lutheran Church or to the family.  Online condolences may be left and a full obituary notice may be viewed at https://www.charterfunerals.com/obituary/chgb.
