Hoisington EMS to Change Staffing Positions

Following an Emergency Medical Service departmental audit during the middle of 2012, it was suggested that Hoisington’s EMS department employ two part-time technicians and do away with the position of full-time assistant director. Hoisington City Manager Jonathan Mitchell says that at their Council meeting, the governing body voted to move forward with this recommendation.

From here, Mitchell says that the City will begin trying to fill these positions, giving preference to paramedics and advanced EMT’s, with the underlying idea of providing a greater level of service to citizens.

Locals Give Their Feedback on New Year’s Resolutions

As we all know, 2013 kicks off Monday, and for many people, with a New Year comes the opportunity to make a New Year’s resolution. To see what locals plan on doing once the clock strikes twelve, individuals outside of the Great Bend Walmart were surveyed, and many say they won’t take part in the tradition.

On the flip-side, other members of the public did share their plans for the coming year, citing objectives ranging from losing weight, to doing better in school.

With the wide range of beliefs and goals for 2013, it is safe to say that everyone hopes to simply take advantage of another New Year, making it one to remember in the community.

Drought Conditions Impact Popular Wings N Wetlands Festival

In what has become a big and popular event for the area, the bi-annual Wings N Wetlands Festival is a 3-day birding extravaganza that draws 200 or more visitors from all over the country to take part in the jam-packed weekend. However, due drought conditions, the 2013 Festival has been suspended. Despite this announcement, Site Manager for the Kansas Wetlands Education Center, Curtis Wolf says that plans are in the making for a smaller-scale event.

In typical Festival years, approximately 200 participants from all over the U.S. come to the area and typically document around 180 species of birds during the WnW Festival weekend. Wolf says that with much of the Festival planning being done so early, and the current conditions being as they are, it was hard to justify the time and resources to offer the quality experience expected from the Festival. The tentative date for the smaller-scale event is April 27th of 2013.

Commentary from Eagle GM Rick Nulton 12/31/12

We’ve now wrapped up the holidays and it’s off to a new year.  I sincerely hope your Christmas and New Year activities went well.

When I married my wife Darlene almost 15 years ago…she warned me about a couple of things.  One was that her kids loved sweet potatoes with marshmallows on top.  I thought…no problem…so do I.  Then she said that more times than not, she manages to burn the marshmallows which has become sort of a family joke and tradition.

I’m here today to report she did not let us down on Christmas day.  It started with the smell of smoke…followed by foot and a half flames flying out the oven door when it was opened.  Fortunately, no harm done and no injuries.  Just had to…scrape off some of the burned marshmallows.  Now you’re probably thinking…Rick…you shouldn’t be talking badly about your wife’s cooking.  Trust me…my wife is one of the best cooks you’ll ever meet.  She could give any fine restaurant a run for their money.

This year was just exceptionally funny…and some family traditions happen whether you want them to or not.  Let’s just say…no one fell into the Christmas tree…and proof of this story is on the Great Bend Post.  I love you Darlene…and am developing a fond taste for…Cajun sweet potatoes.

I’m Eagle g.m. Rick Nulton wishing you all a Happy New Year!

Kobach: Only prosecution will block double-voting

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach says increasing the power of his office is the best way to deter people from double-voting.

Kobach will seek authority from the 2013 Legislature to prosecute election fraud. He said it’s the last major step Kansas needs to take to effectively combat voting irregularities.

He said county prosecutors are often too overworked to take on such cases.

Critics contend Kobach overstates the threat and is suppressing turnout with initiatives he has championed. Those measures include a law requiring all voters to show photo identification at the polls.

But Kobach says his office received reports of more than 10 cases of double-voting from the 2010 election. He argues that prosecuting such cases is the only real deterrent.

Kan. announces monthly program to honor volunteers

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – The Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services has announced a volunteer recognition program that will reward state residents for their good deeds.

Department secretary Shawn Sullivan says the Volunteer of the Month program will begin in January, with winners chosen from nominations submitted to the department.

Each monthly winner will receive a check for $50 and a $20 Walgreens gift card.

Nominees will be judged on several criteria, including outstanding performance, high level of willingness to help others, strong commitment to volunteering and good relationships with those who are helped by the volunteer.

Nominations can be made on the agency’s website or by going to the New England building at 5th Street and Kansas Avenue in Topeka for nomination forms.
