Kan. House leader expects local elections debate

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – A Kansas House member says lawmakers are likely to debate proposals next year to change the scheduling of local elections around the state.

Elections Committee Chairman and Olathe Republican Scott Schwab said Wednesday there’s been House interest in the matter because local elections typically have a low turnout.

Schwab acknowledges the Kansas Senate has shown little interest in the subject. But that could change, as the 40-member Senate opens the 2013 session with 16 new members.

General elections for city offices and local school boards are usually held the first Tuesday in April in odd-numbered years, with primaries in late February or early March.

Schwab said one proposal is to move local general elections to the first Tuesday in November in odd-numbered years.

KU Medical Center names new vice chancellor

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) – The senior associate dean for clinical affairs will take over in February as executive vice chancellor of the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Officials said Wednesday that Dr. Douglas Girod was selected from among three candidates to fill the position. He replaces Barbara Atkinson, who retired in June as dean of the medical school and executive vice chancellor of the medical center in Kansas City, Kan.

Girod, a surgeon, joined the medical faculty in 1994. He is also chairman of the medical school’s Department of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery.

Girod earned his medical degree in 1985 from the University of California at San Francisco. He completed two residencies and a National Institutes of Health research fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Chiefs, Jaguars left in race for No. 1 draft pick

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The joke running through Jacksonville these days carries the same punch line as the one in Kansas City:

“Our team is so bad it can’t even stink in the right year.”

The Chiefs and Jaguars will vie for the top pick in the NFL draft in separate games Sunday. But the value of “winning” the race to the NFL’s worst record is debatable in a year without a clear, franchise-changing prospect.

The Chiefs and Jaguars are both 2-13, but the Chiefs hold the tiebreaker for the No. 1 pick because of their weakness of schedule. The only way Jacksonville can take it is by losing to Tennessee and Kansas City beating Denver. That would give the Jaguars the worst overall record.

Investigation Continues for Death of Barton County Inmate

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Barton County Sheriff’s Office are still investigating the death of a male inmate at the Barton County Detention Facility. As of Wednesday, the only additional information provided by the Sheriff’s Office was the name of the inmate.

Barton County Undersheriff Larry Holliday says that 37 year-old Christopher Michael Grimsley of Hoisington was found dead in a one-man cell Friday evening.

Additional details will be provided after results from an autopsy being conducted in Hays become available, but as of today, no further information is being released.

The inmate had been booked into the facility on November 15th on charges from Hoisington.
