Philip C. “Flip” Hoss, 86, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, in Lenexa, Ks. He was born Aug. 8, 1927, in Seward, Ks., the sixth of nine children of Charles and Otillia (Fahrenbach) Hoss.
After graduating from Radium High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Cavalry, serving as an antitank cannoneer. On Nov. 5, 1954, he married Betty Joann Myers in Great Bend, Ks. They were married for 53 years before her death May 13, 2007.
Flip was employed by Hahner, Foreman and Cale for many years as a heavy equipment operator and helped build the senior high rise living facility, Barton County Community College and numerous other local facilities. He joined Midwest Energy in the late 1970s and was a tree-cutting foreman. He retired in the early 1990s.
Going by the moniker “Capt. P. Hoss – the fishes’ friend,” Flip enjoyed fishing and camping at Lake Wilson with his family and friends, including longtime friends Eugene Eckert and Keith Holmes, both deceased.
He was a life-long member of Prince of Peace Parish. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Prince of Peace Parish Education Fund.
Flip was a loving husband and father, who will always be remembered for his spirit of caring and giving, and his sense of humor.
Survivors include three children Jolene Scholl and her husband Jim of Cudjoe Key, Fla., Catherine Crews and her husband Brad of Overland Park, and Charles Hoss and his wife Becky of Lenexa; seven grandchildren, Kent, Katlyn, Erika, Emily, Meagan, Margo and Leah; one brother, Paul Hoss of Great Bend, two sisters, Angie Geil of Liberty, Mo., and Agnes Berryhill of Miss.; brothers-in-laws, Jim Myers and his wife Alfreda and Dave Myers and his wife Delores of Hays; sisters-in-law, Marie Hoss of Claflin and Dolly Hoss of Dallas, lifelong friend Maurice Bauer of Houston, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Vigil service and Knights of Columbus Rosary will be at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, October 10, 2013 at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 11, 2013 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend. Father Ted Stoecklein will be celebrant. Burial will be in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Seward. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, at Bryant Funeral Home. Memorials are requested to Prince of Peace Parish or Knights of Columbus, in care of the funeral home.
