A lifetime Barton County resident, moving to the Odin area in 1970, Bernard worked for Barton County, and later was employed as a bull dozer operator for George Tregellas and Allen Drilling.

Bernard was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, both of Odin, KS
