Alfred Schmeidler, 91, Great Bend, died September 6, 2014, at Ellinwood Country Living, Ellinwood, Kansas. He was born September 16, 1922, on the family farm at Severin, Kansas, the son of Frank and Elizabeth (Windholz) Schmeidler.
He was a Technical Sergeant in the Army Air Corp, 1942-1946 during WWII. He served in the Atlantic and Pacific Theater. He moved to Hoisington, Kansas, in 1949 and established the Marshall Auto Store. He was the owner and operator of Schmeidler’s Liquor Store from 1962-1980. He went to work at Essex and retired in 1988. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and the Knights of Columbus, all of Hoisington, Kansas, and Prince of Peace Parish, Great Bend.
On May 24, 1948 he married Margaret Pahls at Salina, Kansas. She died January 20, 1974. On August 20, 1988, he married Theresa Axman Sohm at Great Bend. He is survived by his wife of the home, son, Jim Schmeidler and his wife Bev, Great Bend; daughters: Judy Boor and her husband Johnnie, Great Bend; Jane Lehning and her husband Steve, Sublette; Jean Naccarato and her husband Dan, Hutchinson; Joan Day and her husband Mike, Pratt. He also is survived by two stepdaughters, Terri Schneider and her husband Jay, Great Bend; Laurie Koci and her husband Don, Colwich; grandchildren, Jodie Hess, Jamie Miller, Jeff Boor, Andrea Kemp, Matthew Lehning, Shalee Lehning, Luke Naccarato, Kylee Naccarato, Amanda Day, Shanda Day, Dallas Schmeidler, Marcus Schmeidler, Tera Yohon, Derik Schneider, Sara Lagaly, Ryan Koci; eighteen great-grandchildren; brother, Kenny and Betty Schmeidler, Hays; sister-in-laws, LuVerna Schmeidler, Hays, Mary Schmeidler, Hoisington, and Mary Lou Pahls, Tipton; brother-in-laws, Ed and Sis Pahls and Jack and Gwen Pahls, Tipton, and Walt and JoAnn Pahls, Salina. He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Norbert, Marcellus, Martin, Linus, James, and Wendelin; four sisters, Evelyn Rupp, Mary Karlin, Edna Karlin, and Helen Schulte. He was a devoted husband, dad, and grandpa.
Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 10, 2014, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Great Bend, with Fathers Trung Dinh Hoang (Father Louis) and John Schmeidler. Interment will be in the St. John Catholic Cemetery, Hoisington, with military honors conducted by Ft. Riley Honor Guard. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 9, Noon until 9:00 p.m. with a vigil service and Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:00 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home.
