Kansas bill would require parental consent for sex ed

schoolTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Schools would be barred from giving sex education lessons to students without their parents’ consent under a bill before the Kansas Legislature.

The House Education Committee held a hearing on the bill Tuesday that would require school districts to share any sexual education materials with parents and obtain their written consent before teaching it to their children. Several parents and teachers testified in favor of the bill, saying that while some districts have already instituted similar policies, many districts do not properly inform parents about potentially inappropriate material in curriculums.

Opponents included two pastors and a priest, who testified the bill would deprive children of information important to their health.

An identical bill was endorsed by the committee last year, but did not pass beyond the House floor.

Great Bend’s RadioShack expected to close in late summer or early fall

Screen-Shot-2015-02-05-at-4.33.59-PMNews surfaced this month that struggling electronics retailer RadioShack has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and will sell up to 2,400 stores.

Those closings will include the store in Great Bend.

Great Bend Chamber of Commerce President Jan Peters expects the store to shut down later this year.

Jan Peters Audio

Along with Great Bend, five locations in Wichita, one in Newton, Hutchinson, Emporia, and Pittsburg are expected to close.

Peters continued with her economic development report by telling city council members the old Sears building on south Main Street has received a heavy makeover.

Jan Peters Audio

The owner has made three different locations on the end caps of the structure. The Goodwill Store is plopped down in the middle. Peters believed one of those sections was about 8,0000 square feet, another close to 4,000, and the final one roughly 1,500 square feet.

Within in the next few months the City of Great Bend and the owner would like to have an open house of sorts to showcase the renovated buildings for any business looking for a starting location or to relocate.

Great Bend Police monitoring window tinting

tintingThe Great Bend Police Department is working on ways to improve both the officer and public safety in traffic enforcement.

A strong effort has been placed on the monitoring of window tinting. The police department used to have two tinting meters they could use to determine the percentage of light going through.

As Lieutenant Bill Browne tells us, the old meters caused a safety issue and needed to be replaced.

Bill Browne Audio

The city code says the total light transmission shall not be less than 35% when a sun screening device is used. The problem is that anyone can buy cheap window tinting kits at Wal-Mart and other retail stores that go well below the 35% mark.

Sergeant Jay Bacher states the issue goes well beyond a safety concern.

Jay Bacher Audio

Tinting can be hazardous to the driver too. Every driver needs to be able to clearly see cross traffic, pedestrians, bicyclists, or anything that may suddenly dart into the street.

Great Bend Police Officers will allow the public who might be in violation to bring their vehicles in this week during regular business hours for a free tinting screening. During this screening, officers will test and educate those concerned, no tickets will be given if the screening fails. However, full enforcement of window tint monitoring will begin next week.

Fines up to $500 and a month in jail can be handed down for improperly tinted windows.

Kansas town betters English rival in yearly pancake race

LIBERAL, Kan. (AP) — Without a three-time champion competing, a yearly pancake race between women from England’s Olney and a southwestern Kansas town was a griddle riddle until Hannah Belton put that to rest for the Americans.

The 24-year-old second-grade teacher and middle-school cross country coach from Liberal, Kansas, won Shrove Tuesday’s International Pancake Day Race in her hometown. Olney’s Emma Maitland finished six seconds slower.

Shrove Tuesday traditionally is the last day for merrymaking before the start of Lent. Pancakes were thought to be a good way for Christians to consume the fat they were supposed to give up during the 40 days before Easter.

The run’s competitors wear aprons and scarves and run the course with a pancake in their pan, flipping it at the beginning and end of the race.
