Hop on board FrogWatch USA at Cheyenne Bottoms

KWECWith spring just around the corner, the fourth season for Cheyenne Bottoms FrogWatch Chapter is starting and volunteers are needed to help monitor our frogs and toads.

If you love all things amphibian, or just like the idea of being out-of-doors at twilight or after, this program is for you. A 2-hour training session will be held from 3 to 5 p.m., on March 8, at KWEC. Light refreshments will be served. You can sign up to help monitor the Cheyenne Bottoms site or a site near where you live.

FrogWatch USA is a long-term volunteer monitoring program of frogs and toads. During training, participants learn the eight local frog and toad species’ calls, data collection techniques and all things amphibian. Monitoring takes place at the Cheyenne Bottoms location for three minutes, twice a week during one month, which the participant chooses from April through August. It’s that simple.

A volunteer-driven program, participants log in and send their reports to the national center, operated by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. KWEC staff provide training and assistance. Each volunteer will receive a FrogWatch kit that includes a frog and toad call CD, data sheets, clipboard, thermometer and flashlight.

The 2014 season started out dry, but June rains brought forth a spectacular chorus, lasting through August.

So make the leap and sign up for a fun program by calling KWEC at 1-877-243-9268 to register.

Chrysler recalls midsize sedans for transmission glitch

RecallDETROIT (AP) — Fiat Chrysler is recalling nearly 26,000 midsize cars in North America to fix automatic transmissions that might not shift into park.

The recall covers the Chrysler 200 with V-6 engines from the 2015 model year. The company says manufacturing problems at a parts supplier’s factory can cause the nine-speed transmissions to malfunction. Cars could roll away unexpectedly if the cars won’t shift into park.

The company says owners should activate the parking brake before shutting off the engine, until repairs can be made.

Chrysler says it has five customer complaints about the problem, but it knows of no crashes or injuries.

Dealers will inspect and replace transmissions if needed. Customers will be told when they can bring the cars in for service.

Jenkins on House vote to improve tax-free college savings plans

Rep. Jenkins
Rep. Jenkins

WASHINGTON, D.C.– Wednesday, the House of Representatives passed Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins (R-KS) and Congressman Ron Kind’s (D-WI) legislation, H.R. 529 with a veto-proof majority of 401-20. This legislation would expand, modernize, and strengthen tax-free 529 college savings plans to help more Americans save for their children’s education.

“This is a good, sensible bill to improve a critical college savings tool to help more hardworking Kansans and Americans save for their children’s education,” said Rep. Jenkins. “I’m pleased H.R. 529 passed with overwhelming support and I encourage my colleagues in the Senate to quickly approve this legislation. Today we sent a clear message to all families that Congress supports 529s, will keep them tax-free, and will work together to strengthen them so parents can secure a better future for their children.

“I am pleased to see the House pass this commonsense, bipartisan legislation that will help keep college affordable for families in Wisconsin and across the nation,” said Rep. Kind. “With 14 colleges and universities across western and central Wisconsin, I know the importance of saving in advance for higher education. With rising tuition costs and the growing crisis of student loan debt, we need to do everything we can to help students attend college so they can compete in the global marketplace.”

The Legislation:

H.R. 529 improves 529 savings plans by empowering students to use their savings for computers, eliminates an outdated and unnecessary aggregation rule, and allows taxpayers to re-deposit refunds from colleges without taxes or penalties. For more details on the bill, click here.

Bill would prevent candidates from taking names off ballot

vote ballot electionTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A bill to prohibit candidates from withdrawing from an election unless they die received first-round approval in the Kansas House.

The bill also would require political parties to name another candidate to fill ballot vacancies. It is a response to a controversy last year when Democrat Chad Taylor withdrew from the U.S. Senate race a month before the Democratic primary, leaving independent candidate Greg Orman the only challenger to Republican Sen. Pat Roberts.

Republican Rep. Mark Kahrs, of Wichita said during debate Wednesday that similar situations should be prohibited.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports  that the bill was requested by Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who tried to prevent Taylor’s withdrawal from the race.

Democrats argued the law would cause problems when a candidate becomes incapacitated but doesn’t die.

Topeka Zoo bear dies during surgery

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Topeka zoo officials say a 20-year-old black bear died during spinal surgery.

Zoo director Brendan Wiley says the bear, named Peek, died Wednesday during surgery at Kansas State University’s veterinary health center.

Peek was diagnosed with spinal stenosis in January and gradually got worse, recently losing the use of her hind legs.

Wiley said in a news release that the zoo tried several methods, including stem cell therapy, to help the bear before deciding surgery was the only option.

Peek and her sister, Sneak, arrived at the Topeka Zoo in 1996 from Wildlife Prairie Park in Peoria, Illinois.

The zoo acquired two female, orphaned black bear cubs last year. They have not yet been introduced to Sneak.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) – Darius Carter had 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead No. 11 Wichita State to a 63-53 win over Indiana State on Wednesday night.

Fred VanVleet added 15 points while Tekele Cotton scored 12 in a win that saw Wichita State score 30 points in the paint.

The Shockers (26-3, 16-1 Missouri Valley) won their seventh straight game inside the Hulman Center, making it the second longest streak in school history against an opponent at its own arena. It was the 25th victory in the last 29 meetings against the Sycamores.

Indiana State (14-15, 10-7) led for nearly 12 minutes of the first half but a 19-9 run by the Shockers put them up 28-24 at halftime. They never looked back from there.

The Sycamores were led by Khristian Smith with 20 points.

Big 12’s chief reprimands K-State for court-storming case

aaaaKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Big 12 Conference Commissioner Bob Bowlsby is publicly reprimanding Kansas State for failing to prevent Wildcats fans from pouring onto the court after the school’s upset victory over rival Kansas.

Bowlsby’s admonition Wednesday came the same day Kansas State student Nathan Power was publicly identified as the fan who body-checked Kansas forward Jamari Traylor after the Wildcats’ 70-63 victory Monday night.

Power has been cited for disorderly conduct and didn’t return messages Wednesday seeking comment.

No injuries resulted from the court-storming. But Bowlsby says Kansas State failed to ensure the safety and security of the players and fans. Calling what happened “a call to action,” he pressed for policy revisions to ensure it doesn’t happen again.
