GREAT BEND — Paul Hoss, 94, died Nov. 8, 2016, at Rice County District Hospital Long-term Care, Lyons. He was born Sept. 18, 1922, in Lincoln Township, near Seward, the son of Charles and Otillia (Fehrenbach) Hoss. He was a graduate of Radium High School. He married Dorothy Alice Hall Nov. 27, 1946, at Seward. She died Jan. 27, 2007. A lifetime area resident, Mr. Hoss was employed by the Barton County Shop for 40 years, first as a mechanic and later as shop foreman. He was a United States Navy veteran, serving during World War II. He enjoyed carpentry and woodcarving, creating handcrafted writing pens he shared with friends and family even after becoming legally blind.
Mr. Hoss was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #862, American Legion Argonne Post 180, and BPO Elks Lodge #1127, all of Great Bend.
Survivors include two sons, Don Hoss and his wife Anita of Overland Park, and Tim Hoss of Stafford; five daughters, Paula Sue Rixon and her husband Kent of St. John, Barbara Shirk and her husband Layne of Great Bend, Deanna Martinez and her husband Tony of Great Bend, Mary Alice Jones of Sterling, and Jane Bowers and her husband Robert of Ottawa; one sister, Angie Geil of Liberty, Mo.; 22 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Kent Hoss and Daniel Paul Hoss, four brothers, Carl Hoss, Stephen Hoss, Basil Hoss and Philip “Flip” Hoss, and three sisters, Agnes Berryhill, Irene Evers and Ann Bauer.
Vigil Service with Knights of Columbus Rosary will be at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 11, 2016, at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Sat., Nov. 12, 2016, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend with Father Don Bedore celebrating. Burial will be in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Seward, with military rites by the United States Navy Honor Guard. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, Nov. 11, 2016, at Bryant Funeral Home. Memorials have been established with Prince of Peace Parish or Knights of Columbus Council #862, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
