Spencer Ware will miss entire 2017 season

CLEVELAND (AP) – Kansas City Chiefs running back Spencer Ware is likely finished for the season after he tore the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in Friday night’s preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Trainer Rick Burkholder said Ware suffered further damage beyond the torn PCL.

“With that ligament, oftentimes with rehab you can play,” Burkholder said. “His issue is that he also has some damage to what’s called the posterior lateral corner of his knee, which is the outside back portion of his knee which is made up of ligaments and tendon. He damaged those and, at this point in time, our medical staff believes he needs season-ending surgery to correct that problem.

“Like with all these significant injuries, we’ll exhaust all of our options and look at second opinions and then do what’s best for Spencer’s knee and his career.”

Ware led the Chiefs with 921 rushing yards last season.

“Spencer was so good at everything. Especially for a bigger guy, he could kind of do everything,” quarterback Alex Smith said. “… That’s a guy that put a lot of time in, a lot of reps doing all of those things for our offense. He’ll definitely be tough to replace.”

Rookie Kareem Hunt will replace Ware in the starting lineup. Hunt, the Chiefs’ third-round draft pick, has impressed the Chiefs with his rushing and receiving ability. The Chiefs also have veteran backs in Charcandrick West and C.J. Spiller.

“I think we’re going to be OK there,” coach Andy Reid said. “Now, listen, are you going to replace Spence? No. He’s a good football player. The young kid [Hunt], he’ll step in and he’ll do a nice job for us. Charcandrick’s got reps under his belt, C.J. has reps under his belt. I don’t want to take anything away from Spencer and how important he was to our team. But that’s a position where we have a little strength.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs running back Spencer Ware could require season-ending surgery after tearing one ligament in his right knee and damaging another during Friday night’s preseason game in Seattle. Ware had an MRI on Saturday that revealed the extent of the injury. Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder said Sunday that Ware tore the posterior cruciate ligament, an injury that itself is not always season-ending. But Burkholder said Ware also damaged the lateral collateral ligament.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins says her frustration with partisan gridlock in Washington was one of the main reasons she decided not to seek re-election.

On Thursday, Jenkins told an audience in Lawrence that although Donald Trump was not her first choice for president, she believes he has a right to move forward with his agenda because he won, the Lawrence Journal-World reported .

Kansas man convicted of sex assault will get new trial

Quinton-photo KDOC

RENO COUNTY — A Kansas who managed to get his conviction and 72-year sentence overturned for two counts of aggravated criminal sodomy and rape will go to trial.

James Rodney Quinton, 44, Hutchinson, had filed a habeas corpus motion in a sexual assault case that was denied at the District Court level, but reversed by the Kansas Court of Appeals.

Quinton was convicted in 2003 of sexually assaulting a young woman at a Reno County residence. She was able to escape through a window when he fell asleep. She called the police after walking to a closed convenience store in the middle of the night and was treated at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for injuries inflicted during the attack.

In court Friday, his attorney Shannon Crane was taken off the case after plea negotiations broke down. Judge Trish Rose agreed to grant Quinton a new attorney, which means an even longer delay in the case.

He was sentenced to 72 years in prison by the late District Judge Richard Rome. Quinton was represented by the Public Defender Tim O’Keefe and claimed ineffective counsel in his appeal.

District Attorney Keith Schroeder wanted to get the defendant to enter a plea so the victim wouldn’t have to testify. Barring any changes, however, that won’t be an option and the case will go to trial.  Quinton has previous conviction for Robbery and Theft in 1994.

Great Bend Police Chief says he’d like to avoid a hearing and get back to work

Great Bend Police Chief Cliff Couch at the Great Bend City Council June 5, 2017.

All is quiet on city matters in Great Bend on a week without a city council meeting. An official date and time for Great Bend Police Chief Cliff Couch’s suspension hearing is still unknown.

When Couch was suspended on July 24 with pay, he filed his notice for a hearing on July 28 for a chance at a rebuttal in front of the same city council that voted for his suspension with possible termination.

As for Couch, who has been off work for over a month now, he says his focus it to get back to work.

The notice for Couch’s suspension mentioned a hearing would be set within two weeks of his notice, with the council getting the final say following the hearing. Couch’s hearing was pushed back to a later date because he switched attorneys. Couch is now represented by Randy Rathbun, from Depew Gillen Rathbun & McInteer from Wichita.

At the June 5 council meeting, Couch made allegations towards former City Administrator Howard Partington and Mayor Mike Allison for misconduct and unethical procedures. A series of executive sessions later led to his suspension.

The next city council meeting will be Tuesday, September 5 at 7:30 p.m.

Rhodes- photo Polk County

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Texas businessman has been sentenced in Iowa to two years of probation and six months of home confinement for his role in a lottery scandal that impacted players in Kansas and three other states.

Robert Rhodes, who lives near Houston, reached a plea deal to testify against his friend Multi-State Lottery Association computer programmer Eddie Tipton.

Tipton rigged computers to make numbers predictable and gave them to Rhodes and others who won $2.2 million in jackpots from four states. A $16 million Iowa jackpot win wasn’t paid out because lottery officials grew suspicious.

Rhodes pleaded guilty to fraud in Iowa and a computer crime in Wisconsin. The sentence Friday resolves cases in both states.

Eddie Tipton was sentenced Wednesday to up to 25 years in prison. His brother, Tommy Tipton, is serving a 75-day sentence in Texas.
