Great Bend City Council meeting again moved to Events Center

The City of Great Bend notified media outlets Wednesday morning that the upcoming Great Bend City Council meeting will once again be moved to the Great Bend Events Center. The meeting will take place Monday, August, 21 in the main room on 3111 10th Street and will start at 7:30 p.m.

The governing body will conduct their scheduled budget hearing at 7 p.m. on August 21 prior to the regular meeting. The budget hearing will still be held at City Hall at 1209 Williams because it was originally publicly posted to be held at City Hall. According to state statute the meeting must remain at the original location or the city would have to file for an extension.

Over 400 people showed up at the last city council meeting on August 7, which saw over an hour of conversation devoted to the current suspension of Great Bend Police Chief Cliff Couch. No hearing date for Couch’s rebuttal at his suspension has been announced yet. Couch was suspended with possible termination for remarks made about possible misconduct by city administration, failing to cooperate with City Administrator Howard Partington, and not performing a requested investigation.

Gas leak ends school day at Salina High School

SALINA-  Officials with USD 305 and fire officials were busy on the second day of classes at Salina South High School.

Just after 8a.m., officials checked the school, 730 East Magnolia in Salina, after report of a possible gas leak.

Officials did resolve the gas leak at approximately 8:30 a.m., according to Jennifer Bradford-Vernon, public information director.   They hoped to resume classes but released students just before 10am.

The closure is due to the length of time required to air out the building, according to Bradford-Vernon.

Officials arranged transportation for students who ride the bus.

“Dr. Hardy, USD 305 superintendent thanked local authorities for their expertise and the South High students for their cooperation. He praised school staff for their quick response,” Bradford-Vernon said.

“Sunny” the tiger euthanized at Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo

Sunny

Press Release from the City of Great Bend…

It is with great sadness that the Great Bend-Brit Spaugh Zoo announces the passing of our beloved Bengal Tiger, Sunny. Sunny Delight was humanely euthanized today after animal care and veterinary staff decided that his quality of life had deteriorated to a point that we could no longer keep him comfortable.

For the last five years Sunny was monitored closely and had undergone treatment for severe arthritis and stomach ulcers. During his 2012 annual physical he was found to be in the beginning stages of kidney failure and in 2014 a cancerous tumor was removed from the base of his tail. A necropsy has been performed and results are pending.

Sunny moved to the zoo along with his brother Spirit in 1998 when they were just eight weeks old. While Spirit got most of the public’s attention because he was a white tiger, Sunny has always been his keeper’s favorite due to his friendly disposition. He was always eager to offer a friendly “chuff” to anyone.

Zookeeper Ashley Burdick reported on behalf of all zoo staff, “We are devastated. Tigers in captivity have a life expectancy of 15-17 years and we were honored to have Sunny two years longer. He would have been 19 years old on September 2 and we knew this day would come, but our hearts are still broken at the loss.”

The zoo will not immediately acquire new tigers as the building and yard are nearly twenty years old and in need of some renovation. After the renovations are complete the zoo will seek to acquire Malayan or Sumatran tigers through the Species Survival Plan.

Third suspect jailed in connection with fatal shooting of officer near Kansas City

KANSAS CITY -Law enforcement authorities continue investigating the shooting death last week of a police officer near Kansas City and have arrested a third suspect.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported Tuesday night Jacob Johnson, 27, of Clinton, was charged in Henry County with hindering prosecution of a felony.

On Friday, A judge entered a not guilty plea for the man accused in the killing of a western Missouri police officer Gary Michael during a traffic stop.

Ian McCarthy appeared via video at his arraignment at the Henry County Courthouse in Clinton. He is charged with first-degree murder in the August 6, shooting death.

McCarthy’s next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 20.

Officer Michael was shot after he stopped a driver for a traffic violation. Prosecutors say McCarthy jumped out of his car and fired at the officer before driving a few blocks, crashing the car and fleeing on foot. McCarthy was arrested after a two-day manhunt.

Michael returned the gunfire, wounding McCarthy.

Joyce’s 3-run double rallies A’s past Royals

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – Matt Joyce hit a three-run double to cap a six-run eighth inning and the Oakland Athletics rallied past the Kansas City Royals 10-8 on Tuesday night.

Joyce also homered and had four RBIs. Khris Davis added his 33rd home run and Matt Olson hit his fourth in five days to help the A’s clinch at least a tie for the season series between the former division rivals.

The Royals hit three home runs in the top of the eighth, including Mike Moustakas’ 35th, to take a four-run lead before Oakland stormed back against relievers Joakim Soria and Mike Minor (5-5).

Ryon Healy and Olson hit RBI singles off Soria. Matt Chapman and Chad Pinder struck out swinging, and pinch-hitter Rajai Davis was intentionally walked to load the bases before Joyce lined a 1-0 pitch from Minor off the left-field wall.

The loss prevented the Royals from moving past the Angels in the race for the second AL wild card.
