Kansas to honor former coach Mangino during season opener

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Kansas plans to honor former coach Mark Mangino, who was forced out amid allegations that he abused his players, and the rest of the 2007 team that won the Orange Bowl, during its season opener.

The school said Tuesday that the team will be inducted into its Hall of Fame, along with former players Aqib Talib and Anthony Collins, during the opener Sept. 2 against Southeast Missouri State.

Mangino led the long-suffering Jayhawks to a 12-1 record in 2007, a season capped by a victory over Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl. But things soon soured and Mangino was forced out in 2009, when allegations surfaced that he physically and verbally abused his players.

One of his assistants on the 2007 team, David Beaty, is now the Jayhawks’ head coach.

Accidental gunshot wound reported in Ellinwood

On Monday, August 14, at about 6:45 p.m., Barton County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to an address in Ellinwood for the report of a gunshot wound. Upon arrival Sheriff’s officers contacted Don White, age 26 of Ellinwood.

White advised he was operating an ATV in the riverbed near the Knop Sandpit when he heard gunfire. At about the same time, he heard a bullet ricochet and felt pain in his right knee. Investigation indicated a bullet had evidently ricocheted off of a hard surface passing through the blue jeans he was wearing and leaving approximately a 3 inch mark on his right knee where the bullet grazed his leg. White refused medical treatment by Ellinwood EMS.

Sheriff’s deputies checked the area to determine who was shooting but no persons were found.

The Sheriff’s Office strongly urges persons who are engaged in various shooting sports to always know where your bullets are going. Always check for other persons that may be downrange, particularly in rural areas that have trees and other obstructions. Many common rifle rounds are dangerous for more than 1 mile. Hard surfaces and water can cause ricochet rounds. An accidental gunshot wound can result in criminal or civil proceedings.

In this case tragedy was narrowly averted. Please use caution and common sense when using firearms.

Kansas jail escapee caught attempting to flee on a bicycle

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — A man who escaped from jail has been apprehended in eastern Kansas and returned to custody.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports 39-year-old George Burgess Jr. escaped the Leavenworth County Jail through a side door in July while on a work detail. Maj. Jim Sherley says Burgess was in jail on a misdemeanor count of battery.

A Lawrence Police Department statement says officers responded to a call reporting a wanted person at large Sunday. Police say Burgess was located riding a bicycle and attempted to flee by bike and then on foot after seeing the approaching officers. Police apprehended Burgess without further incident and returned him to the jail.

Sherley tells The Associated Press that Burgess appeared in district court Monday and would have been charged with escape from custody.

KBI: Kansas man’s death being investigated as homicide

TESCOTT, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says it is investigating the death of a rural Kansas man as a homicide.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office says the body of 34-year-old Matthew Schoshke was found Saturday in a rural home near Tescott.

KBI spokeswoman Melissa Underwood says the agency is looking for Schoshke’s silver 2006 Ford F-150 extended cab pickup, with Kansas tag 892 DZO. The front license plate reads “EATBEEF” and the truck has a chrome push guard on the front and a black plastic tool box in the back.

Authorities have not released any information on the circumstances of Schoshke’s death.

USD 428 revisits policy for providing over-the-counter medication

The Great Bend school district took a step to make the process of administering over-the-counter medicine to students easier for parents at Monday’s USD 428 Board of Education meeting.

In the past, students were required to have a written consent from their physician to have nurses at school be allowed to give them medication.

USD 428 Superintendent Khris Thexton says a revised policy will now allow parental consent to determine if students are allowed over-the-counter medication.

USD 428 does not stock any medications. The district only has medications that parents leave with the school. The school only gives out Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved drugs.

The parent/guardian must submit a Permission for Medication form to the building administrator requesting the school’s cooperation in the medication supervision and releasing the school district and personnel from liability.

By CRISTINA JANNEY

Triston Werth, an Ellis County teen critically injured in three-story fall in Cancun last week, died of his injuries Monday night, according to a family member.

Werth, 19, was being treated for a head injury at the Houston Trauma Center. His family donated his organs.

Maternal grandmother Debbie Casper said she was comforted in knowing Triston was able to help others in his death.

“He would have helped any way he could,” she said. “He was an outgoing, happy, loving kid.”

Werth would have been a sophomore in business at Fort Hays State University this fall and wanted to own his own business.

After Werth’s fall, he had emergency surgery in Mexico. Triston’s parents, Douglas Werth and Misty Hynes, both of Hays, traveled to Cancun and arranged to have him transferred to a hospital in the United States.

Triston was vacationing in Cancun with a group of friends at the time of the accident, which left him in a severe coma. Triston landed head first on his right side on concrete. The cause of the accident is still not know.

Casper said an autopsy is scheduled in attempts to learn more.

Family and friends established the fundraising page to assist the family following the accident.

The Mexican hospital asked for all the costs up front, which were significant. The family will also owe for transportation costs to Houston.

Funeral arrangements will be handled by Hays Memorial Chapel. Casper said she anticipated the funeral service would be next week.
