Three new wheat varieties making their debut this fall

After several years of being put through the field trial paces, three new wheat varieties from the K-State wheat development program are making their debut this fall. Growers can now purchase certified seed of these varieties for planting in the coming weeks. These new wheats have been released through the Kansas Wheat Alliance, of which K-State is a part. The president of that alliance, Daryl Strouts says producers in southern Kansas wheat country can benefit from a new variety named Larry.

The second new entry, Zenda, is being touted as a potential successor to the leading wheat variety by acreage in Kansas over the last several years, Everest.

Brownback Executive Order to aid in Hurricane Harvey relief

TOPEKA—Governor Sam Brownback on Wednesday issued an executive order that will lift regulations on motor carriers traveling through Kansas en route to aid in recovery from widespread damage left by Hurricane Harvey.

Executive Order 17-03 applies to commercial vehicles directly particpating in relief and restoration of areas in Texas recovering from the destruction of the hurricane and resulting floods. Under the order, certain motor carrier fees and regulations will be waived.

“There’s no doubt the people of Houston and the surrounding communities are facing historic devastation,” Governor Brownback said. “Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with Texas. Their neighbors here in Kansas are ready to assist.”

Separately, the Kansas National Guard is on standby to deploy to the areas impacted when called by disaster operations command. Resources such as high-water vehicles, communications teams, and Guardsmen, among others, are available when called upon to relieve troops currently in the area.

Kansas is also the coordinating state for the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC), in charge of coordinating relief efforts with other states.

“The stories coming out of the hurricane zone prove the power of what happens when neighbors work together,” said Lt. Governor Jeff Colyer. “We will continue working together to help the victims long after the floodwaters recede.”

The executive order is in immediate effect. Read the full text of the EO 17-03 document.

Barton men’s soccer sweeps conference awards

A road victory and two wins over ranked opponents, the Barton Community College men’s team is off to a great start to the 2017 season. Leading in what has been truly a team effort, two freshman Cougars have been recognized this week in being awarded the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference soccer players of the week as Colin Roemer earns the player of the week honor with Luciano Trasolini anchoring the defensive backline to earn the goalkeeper award.

Roemer was a nightmare for opponents last week in leading the nation by scoring eight goals and distributing four assists in a twenty point total collegiate debut. Roemer made his debut on Tuesday netting four goals and an assist in leaping to the top three of program best single game efforts. Helping Barton to consecutive upset victories this past weekend, the Woelferlingen, Germany, native accounted for all three scores in a 3-1 win over No. 18 Laramie County Community College then accounted for the first two goals before knocking in the game winner on Saturday in thumping No. 6 Trinidad State Junior College 7-2.

If not for an own goal caused by a defensive misplay, Trasolini and the defensive line would have pitched consecutive shutouts to open the season. Regardless, the Burnaby, Canada, native helped organize a stout defensive line in the three games surrendering just two additional goals the rest of the way with both coming in Sunday’s 7-2 win over Trinidad.

Next up for the Cougars is a trip to Sedalia, Missouri, on Thursday for a 4:00 p.m. kick at State Fair Community College with its next home date coming Sunday in a 4:00 p.m. kick versus NOC-Tonkawa.

KHP: Russell man jailed after chase in Ellis County

Smith-photo KDOC

By JONATHAN ZWEYGARDT

A  Russell man was arrested Tuesday following a chase in Ellis County.

Joshua A. Smith, 28, Russell, was arrested northeast of Hays Tuesday night after fleeing from law enforcement officials in the Hays area, according to Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Tod Hileman.

At approximately 8 p.m. Tuesday, a KHP trooper attempted to stop a 2012 Nissan Versa in the Hays area when, according to Hileman, the driver fled the scene.

Hileman said the driver traveled north of Hays on country roads where the chase ended at 310th Avenue and Severin Road, 6 miles east of Highway 183 and approximately 6 miles north of Interstate 70.

There the driver exited the vehicle and fled on foot in a pasture between Hadley Range Avenue and 310th Avenue, Hileman said.

After about an hour, law enforcement officials located Smith and arrested him without incident.

Hileman said Smith was arrested on suspicion of speeding, fleeing and attempt to elude law enforcement and a number of traffic violations. He also had a felony warrant out for his arrest.

He was booked into the Ellis County jail.   Smith has previous convictions for burglary and drugs in Barton and Ellis County, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

USD 428 all for a booming Great Bend economy and growth

According to the 2016-2017 Classification and Enrollment numbers from the Kansas State High School Activities Association, the Great Bend school district was the 9th smallest school in Class 5A out of 32 school districts. The enrollment numbers were based from the high school last year. The 2017 official enrollment numbers are not due until September 20.

USD 428 Superintendent Khris Thexton says he would like to see a steady growth of students each year because what is good for the district is usually good for the community.

Khris Thexton Audio

Enrollment for the most part has been on a downward trend in Central and Western Kansas. Thexton says with just north of 2,800 total students in all classes this year, Great Bend has been fortunate to stay fairly flat with their enrollment.

Khris Thexton Audio

Thexton says when he first arrived in Great Bend in 2013, Riley Elementary School had three classes for each grade level. That statistic has since dropped to two classes per grade. Monitoring the class size, if any elementary classroom gets too full, USD 428 will reassign incoming or new students to a different grade school within the district.
