Madison Street home avoids demolition with steady improvements

Once unsafe house at 1217 Madison Street is receiving repairs.

A lot of progress has been made on improvements at 1217 Madison Street in Great Bend. The once unsafe and dangerous structure with fire damage had its public hearing last week to determine if the City of Great Bend would raze the building.

At the June 5 Great Bend City Council meeting, Code Enforcement Officer Stuart Baker mentioned insurance adjusters thought the house was close to being totaled out. At the public hearing last Monday, Baker says the owner has made a lot of progress to repair the house.

The Madison home endured a fire on February 26, 2017 that severely damaged the front of the house and the owner reported termite damage. Baker says the interior has since been gutted with a new electrical service to be installed and more renovations to come.

The council voted to allow the owner to keep making improvements after showing intentions to make the property safe.

SEDGWICK COUNTY – A small crowd attended a rally at the Old Wichita Courthouse Sunday evening in Solidarity with those injured or killed in the Charlottesville protests.

The Peace and Social Justice Center of South Central Kansas invitation indicated the rally was an effort to stand up to racism, fascism and hate and to support equality and human rights.

Former Kansas democrat congressional candidate James Thompson and Larry Burks, president of the Wichita chapter of the NAACP addressed the crowd.  Groups also held rallies in Topeka and Pittsburg Kansas, according to a social media report.

Protesters decrying hatred and racism say they felt compelled to gather and counteract the white supremacist rally that spiraled into deadly violence in Virginia.

The gatherings Sunday spanned from anti-fascist protests in San Francisco to a march to President Donald Trump’s home in New York.

In Seattle, police arrested three men as Trump supporters and counter-protesters converged downtown.

In Denver, several hundred demonstrators gathered beneath a statue of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in City Park and marched about 2 miles (3.22 kilometers) to the state Capitol.

In New York, protesters marched from several locations in Manhattan to Trump Tower, demanding the president denounce white nationalist groups.

A crowd gathered for a vigil in Charlottesville, Virginia, on the street where a day earlier a car rammed into a peaceful crowd of anti-white-nationalist protesters, killing one.

Mahomes promoted to second string quarterback

ST. JOSEPH, MO (AP) – Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid announced Sunday that rookie quarterback Patrick Mahomes will now be the backup quarterback.

Reid said the move was not because of the performance of quarterback Tyler Bray, who was starting quarterback Alex Smith’s backup on Friday.

“We are going to give Patrick a chance to work with the twos like Tyler (Bray) has had here the last couple of weeks,” Reid said. “It is not because of Tyler’s performance in the game. I think he actually played very well and Patrick did a nice job too.”

In Friday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers, Mahomes finished 7-of-9 for 49 yards and a touchdown.

Reid said all three of his quarterbacks performed well in the Chiefs’ 27-17 loss to the 49ers.

“It gives him an opportunity to step up and work with that second group and see what he can do there,” Reid said. “While I am on quarterbacks, Alex (Smith) like I mentioned yesterday, did a nice job. All positive at that position.”

Finding developers for a Great Bend truck stop remains challenging

As trucks continue to fill up the north portion of the parking lot at Walmart in Great Bend, the thoughts of creating a proper truck stop are revisited over and over. Although there appears to be a need, the City of Great Bend is finding out very few investors are interested in financing a truck stop.

Great Bend Chamber of Commerce CEO Jan Peters worked with two different companies but eventually neither company was interested in building a truck stop. Peters says she has lined up another potential investor with hopes of a different outcome.

The City of Great Bend and the Great Bend City Council develop yearly goals they would like to see accomplished or received more attention. Finding investors or developers interested in building a truck stop has been mentioned as a goal for the city multiple times.

Almanac makes winter weather prediction

LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — Folks rooting for a snowy winter are going to like the forecast from the Farmers’ Almanac, in the Northeast, at least.

The Maine-based almanac that goes on sale this week is predicting a snowy winter from Maryland to Maine with five coastal storms to bring misery to the region.

The publication, now in its 200th year, predicts cold weather for central regions, wet weather for the southeastern states, and dry weather for the nation’s western third.

The almanac editors aren’t afraid to go out on a limb using a secret formula that dates to 1818.

But that doesn’t mean they’re always right. The publication was off the mark last winter when heavy snow failed to materialize in the Midwest and the Middle Atlantic states were milder than anticipated.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas teenager who won’t even be old enough to vote is running for governor.

Jack Bergerson has officially filed to run as a Democrat for governor of Kansas in the 2018 election. The Wichita teen says he wants to give Kansas voters a chance to try something that’s never been tried before.

The Kansas City Star reports that Bryan Caskey, director of elections for the secretary of state’s office, says Kansas doesn’t set any qualifications to run for governor such as age, residency or experience.

One of Bergerson’s 17-year-old classmates, Alexander Cline, will run to be his lieutenant governor. Cline will be old enough to vote by the election, unlike his running mate.

Bergerson’s announcement Monday brought national attention, including an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel
