Blue-green algae blooms increase at Vet’s Lake

Great Bend Public Lands Director Scott Keeler says the city’s decision to cancel Saturday’s canoe races during Party in the Park is a precautionary measure only and does not mean that Veteran’s Memorial Lake is about to go back on the Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s blue-green algae warning list.

Keeler says the city is treating the lake once again with alum in low doses after city staff noticed an increase in blue-green algae blooms.

Keeler says the recent hot weather that has been followed by cooler temperatures is the reason for the return of the algae.

Despite the slight increase in blue-green algae in the lake, Keeler says it remains safe to fish and eat any fish that are caught. He says the insertion of alum into the lake this week will remain a regular maintenance issue going forward.

Charge of not reporting sex abuse against Kan. superintendent dismissed

Kleidosty- photo Linn County

TONGANOXIE, Kan. (AP) — Linn County authorities have dismissed a criminal case against a Tonganoxie school superintendent who was charged with not reporting sex abuse cases.

Chris Kleidosty was scheduled to appear Monday in Linn County District Court but County Attorney James Brun recently dismissed the charges.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports Kleidosty was charged in February with failing to report two sex abuse cases in the Prairie View school district, where he previously was superintendent. He was placed on administrative leave with pay at Tonganoxie after the arrest.

The charges were dismissed without prejudice, meaning they could be refiled.

A teacher and an administrator at Prairie View High School were arrested for alleged sexual relations with two students.

Kleidosty has contended that he always cooperated with authorities investigating the case.

KANSAS CITY, KAN. – A former civilian hospital employee was convicted Tuesday on federal charges of attacking a woman who he set on fire and attacked with a straight razor, according to U.S. Attorney Tom Beall.

A jury found Clifford Currie, 55, Leavenworth, Kan., guilty on one count of assault with intent to commit murder.

During trial, prosecutors presented evidence that on Sept. 7, 2016, Currie threw gasoline or some other inflammable liquid on his supervisor, Katie Ann Blanchard, lit her on fire and assaulted her with a straight edge razor and scissors. A co-worker came to the Blanchard’s aid when she heard screams and saw Blanchard on fire from the chest up. Currie was subdued by hospital employees and then arrested

Sentencing is set for Oct. 31. He faces a penalty of 20 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000. The FBI and the U.S. Army Military Police investigated. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kim Flannigan and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney James Ward are prosecuting.

Cards hit 3 homers, pound Royals 10-3 for 4th straight win

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Yadier Molina, Jedd Gyorko and Randal Grichuk went deep, the Cardinals scored so much in the fifth inning that they broke the scoreboard, and St. Louis rolled to a 10-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.

Michael Wacha (9-4) allowed a three-run double to Cheslor Cuthbert but otherwise kept the Royals in check, surrendering six hits over six innings to win for the sixth time in seven decisions.

Molina homered off Jason Vargas (13-6) in the fourth and Grichuk and Gyorko connected to highlight the six-run fifth, when the crown-shaped video board at Kauffman Stadium suddenly went dark.

About half of it came back online in the seventh, when the Cardinals were tacking on runs.

Chiefs’ Len Dawson to retire after final season in booth

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Hall of Fame quarterback-turned broadcaster Len Dawson, who led the Kansas City Chiefs to three AFL titles and their only Super Bowl, will retire from the radio booth after the upcoming season.

The Chiefs and their radio network announced Dawson’s decision in a joint statement Tuesday.

Dawson joined the Dallas Texans in 1962 and led the franchise to its first AFL title, then stayed with the organization when it moved to Kansas City. The Chiefs also won titles in 1966 and 1969, when they beat the Minnesota Vikings in the Super Bowl and Dawson was the game’s MVP.

He began broadcasting in 1966, while he was still playing, and joined the Chiefs’ radio network in 1984. Dawson then joined Dan Dierdorf and Frank Gifford in 2012 as the only people to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as both a player and broadcaster.
