United Way of Central Kansas Stuff the Bus dates

Before the students fill the buses, United Way aims to fill the bus with much needed items for their 23 Community Partners.

This is the seventh year that United Way has put on this event. What started in Great Bend has now expanded to Ellinwood, Larned, and Hoisington and is a vital part of the campaign every year. Donations  help to alleviate the financial strain on these agencies so that their time, energy, and money can go to making our community stronger by providing services.

The Wish List changes each year to best suit the needs of every agency that United Way helps support. It is that time of year that many of these items go on sale, so be sure to watch the sales ads.

This year’s Stuff the Bus events will be held:

Ellinwood – August 15  at Wolf Park in conjunction with the Ellinwood Farmers Market

Hoisington – August 16 at Town & Country Supermarket from 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Items can be dropped
off in advance at Clara Barton Hospital or Dairy Queen.

Great Bend – August 16 from 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. at both Dillons locations with Eagle Radio joining at Dillons on 10th Street, so be sure to listen for us on the radio. We will also be out at Wal-Mart on August 16 from 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Larned – August 16 at Dillons and Shopko from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

If your business, organization, or church would like to have a collection box and bring it by the day of your local Stuff the Bus, UWCK can bring by a box and flyers. For more information about these events follow United Way of Central Kansas on Facebook or visit our website www.uwck.org.

K-State coach Weber agrees to 2-year contract extension

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Kansas State basketball coach Bruce Weber agreed a two-year contract extension Tuesday that could keep him with the Wildcats through the 2020-21 season.

It was the first major personnel decision made by new athletic director Gene Taylor.

Weber had two years left on an extension he signed in April 2013, and the terms of those two years remain unchanged. That means he is due $2.15 million this season and $2.25 million next season, and the two extension years will pay him $2.35 million and $2.45 million.

The final two years of the agreement now include a reduced buyout provision.

Weber was on the hot seat last season before leading the Wildcats to 21 wins and a win over Wake Forest in a First Four game in the NCAA Tournament. Kansas State lost to Cincinnati in the next round.

Over $5,000 raised at Bike Brew Q in Great Bend

A group of cyclists enjoys its ride in favorable weather at the second annual Bike Brew Q event July 29. Over 60 cyclists from all over the state participated in the bike portion of the event and the routes took them all over Barton County.

Over 160 cyclists, craft beer and barbecue enthusiasts came together and raised upwards of $5,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at the second annual Bike Brew Q event at the Great Bend Expo Complex on Saturday.

Cyclists headed out in the morning and routes were available from 20-72 miles and included road and gravel routes. All routes included support and gear (SAG) stops sponsored by local businesses and philanthropy groups, and gave riders a chance to rest, hydrate and refuel. The SAG stops were sponsored by Golden Belt Bicycle Co., Skikes Bikes, Image total Fitness and Barton County Young Professionals.

Following the cycling event the Craft Brew Expo took place from 1-4  featuring 8 breweries from 3 states. The breweries brought their own personnel, merchandise and beer to the event to showcase their products. Expo attendees had access to unlimited samples, free giveaways by the breweries and all ticket holders received a free Bike Brew Q pint glass.

The expo included Wichita Brewing Co., Three Rings Brewing Co., LB Brewing Co., Odell Brewing Co., Tallgrass Brewing Co., Salt City Brewing, Aero Plains Brewing and COOP Ale Works.

Wichita Brewing Company Operations Manager Kyle Banick pours a beer sample for a Craft Brew Expo attendee at the Great Bend Expo Complex at Bike Brew Q.

Event Chair Ryan Fairchild said he was very happy with the event.

“2017 served as a proving year, this event is here to stay,” he said. “Our participants gave their sweat and hard earned money to help raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. I am extremely proud of what has been accomplished with this event, bringing together cycling, craft beer, barbecue and charitable giving.”

Craft Brew Expo Director Joe Vinduska said the event went off without a hitch.

“We were extremely happy with the turnout,” he said. “Everyone had a great time, and we were very stoked to have these breweries come to our city.  This is beer that is distributed on not only a regional level, but a national level, so the fact that they agreed to come to Great Bend is a big deal and we enjoyed showing them that Great Bend loves their beer and at the same time raising money for a great cause.”

Kansas man charged in crash that killed 4-motorcycle riders

CISNEROS HERNANDEZ- photo Keith County

OGALLALA, Neb. (AP) — A 22-year-old Kansas man has been charged with vehicular homicide for the crash deaths of four Iowa residents in western Nebraska.

Authorities say a car driven by 22-year-old Jeser Cisneros-Hernandez, of Liberal, Kansas, crossed the center line on U.S. Highway 26 south of Lake McConaughy (muh-KAH’-nuh-hay) on July 1, striking two motorcycles carrying two people each.

Authorities say 54-year-old Sheila Matheny and 61-year-old James Matheny, from Bedford, Iowa, were on one motorcycle. The other riders were 58-year-old Michal Weese and 59-year-old Jerolyn Weese, who lived in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Court records don’t list an attorney for Cisneros-Hernandez, who remained in the Keith County Jail on Friday. He’d told investigators that he’d had little rest the day of the crash while driving from his workplace in Sidney, Montana, home to Kansas.

Jefferson City takes down Braves 12-1 in Mid-State’s Regional opener

Jefferson City, Missouri made quick work of the Great Bend Braves in the opening round of the Mid-State Regional in Fargo, North Dakota Thursday. The Missouri state Jr. Legion champion scored in every inning in beating Great Bend 12-1 in the first game of pool play for both teams.

It was a 1-1 game after the first inning but Jeff City scored 2 runs in the second, 1 in the third, three in the fourth and 5 in the fifth inning to roll up 12 runs to win the game in 5-innings.

Great Bend will play two games Friday. At 3:00 the Braves take on Sioux Falls, South Dakota before facing Fargo at 5:30. Sioux Falls lost both of their games Thursday which means Great Bend can advance to Saturday’s semi-finals with a win over the South Dakota team in the early game Friday.

The Braves are now 31-16 on the season.
