Two charged after police find drugs, cash in their Kansas motel room

RENO COUNTY — A Kansas man and woman were formally charged Thursday with possession of heroin, two different prescription  drugs with intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.

On July 26, Police arrested Charles J. Davis III, 22 and Tara Moeller, 26, both of Hutchinson, after a local motel operator reported possible damage to one of the rooms while others motel guests complained of the smell of marijuana.

Police say they reportedly found the drugs and drug paraphernalia as well as a substantial amount of cash in the room after Davis

gave written permission to search to conduct a search. Both are free on bond and are due back in court on August 9.

Royals rally to beat Mariners 6-4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Brandon Moss hit two home runs and Lorenzo Cain drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning as the Kansas City Royals beat the Seattle Mariners 6-4 on Thursday night.

The Royals rallied from deficits of 2-0 and 3-2 for their 32nd comeback victory. They snapped a three-game losing streak.

Moss homered in the fifth off Yovani Gallardo after Mike Moustakas had walked. That snapped a four-game homer-less skid for the Royals, which matched their longest drought of the season.

Moss also homered in eighth for his 11th career multi-homer game.

Emilio Pagan (0-2) took the loss, giving up two runs, one unearned, in the seventh.

Jayhawks cruise again on Italy Tour with 92-61 rout

ROME – It was déjà vu for Kansas men’s basketball as the Jayhawks cruised to a 92-61 win against the Players Group Thursday evening at Honey Sport City. KU improved to 2-0 on its 2017 Italy Tour after posting a 90-56 win against Stella Azzurra HSC Roma a day earlier.

Sophomore center Udoka Azubuike led KU with 15 points. The Delta, Nigeria, big man recorded dunks on all seven of his field goals in the contest, giving him 12 dunks in the two Kansas Italy Tour victories. With the win, the Jayhawks improved to 81-9 all-time in exhibition play and now have won their last 22 exhibition contests dating back to 2012.

In the win against the Players Group, Kansas used a balanced attack as four other Jayhawks joined Azubuike in scoring in double figures. Sophomore guard Malik Newman had 13 points, sophomore guard Charlie Moore 12, senior guard Devonte’ Graham 11 and freshman guard Marcus Garett added 10. Garrett posted a double-double pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds along with three steals.

The KU travel contingent spent Thursday morning and early afternoon touring Vatican City, including the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica. On Friday, the travel party will take a train to Milan where the Jayhawks will play two more games on Aug. 5 and 6. KU will face the Players Group for the second-straight game on Aug. 5 and an Italy All Star A2 squad on Aug. 6. Both games will be played at PalaSport Enrico Somaschini (PalaPorada), and will tip at 7 p.m. local, 12 p.m. (CT).

Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson returns from tooth issue

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson returned to training camp Thursday after missing two workouts with a tooth abscess, while a trio of cornerbacks had to leave practice early with various injuries.

Terrance Mitchell, who could start at cornerback alongside Marcus Peters, went to the locker room on a cart with a sore hamstring. Roster long shots J.R. Nelson left with a groin injury and Keith Baxter with a wrist injury.

Running back Charcandrick West continued to do rehab work after dealing with an ankle injury earlier in the week. Defensive end Chris Jones and left guard Parker Ehinger also continued their rehab. Jones had knee surgery in July and Parker had surgery to repair his ACL last November.

MILWAUKEE (AP) – Keon Broxton drove in the go-ahead run and saved a run with a leaping catch, Matt Garza made a strong start in his return from the disabled list, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 Thursday afternoon. Garza, making his first start since July 21st because of a right leg strain, gave up one earned run on four hits in 5 2/3 innings to give second-place Milwaukee its first home series win over St. Louis since July 2012.

ST. ALBANS, Mo. (AP) – Akshay Bhatia has won the Boys Junior PGA Championship and shattered a scoring record that had stood for 24 years. Bhatia, a 15-year-old from Wake Forest, North Carolina closed with a 5-under 67 on Thursday at The Country Club of St. Albans for a three-shot victory.

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State’s Mike Warren established himself as one of the nation’s most promising young running backs two years ago. David Montgomery did the same thing last season. The Cyclones are hoping that pairing Warren and Montgomery together this fall will give them a winning running game after finishing 3-9 last season.

Kansas man jailed on felony charge after he damages home, car

SALINE COUNTY- Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on numerous charges after a he caused damage to a home and vehicle.

Just before 3a.m. Thursday, police responded to a disturbance at an east Salina home, according to Police Captain Paul Forrester.

Officers found 27-year-old Derek White of Salina. He appeared to be under the influence of narcotics and had damaged the walls, ceiling, ceiling fan and a car parked in the garage of his mother’s home following an argument, according to Forrester. White resisted arrest.

Police ultimately booked White into the Saline County Jail on charges of felony damage to property and resisting arrest.

Damage to the home and car is estimated at $1,200.

Man sentenced for Kansas murder, setting house fire

INDEPENDENCE –  An Oklahoma man was sentenced Thursday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for at least 50 years for murder and related crimes, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said.

Thad Christopher Green, 33, Pawhuska, Okla., was sentenced in Montgomery County District Court by Judge F. William Cullins. In addition to the life sentence, Green was sentenced to 53 months for related charges. A jury found Green guilty in May of one count of murder in the first degree, one count of arson and one count of aggravated burglary. The convictions stemmed from crimes that occurred in December 2015 in connection with the death of Cameron Wawrzyniak in Montgomery County.

The case was investigated by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Osage County, Okla. Sheriff’s Office, Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office, Coffeyville Police Department and the Osage Nation Tribal Police. Assistant Attorneys General Jessica Domme and Amanda Voth of Schmidt’s office prosecuted the case against Green.

Unanimous: Senate Passes Bill to Award Bob Dole the Congressional Gold Medal

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) today announced the Senate has unanimously passed his legislation with U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins (R-Kan.) to award former Kansas U.S. Senator Robert J. Dole with the Congressional Gold Medal. Roberts secured all 100 U.S. senators to cosponsor the legislation.

“The overwhelming support from every U.S. Senator shows how deserving Bob Dole is of this award,” said Roberts. “Bob has spent nearly his whole life in service to our nation. From his days in Russell, Kansas, his service in World War II, and his lifetime dedication to public service, Bob Dole embodies the American spirit. The Bob Dole Congressional Gold Medal Act, was introduced on July 24, 2017. If passed by the House and Senate, the bill would award Sen. Dole with the Congressional Gold Medal in “recognition for his service to the nation as a soldier, legislator and statesman.” It is the highest expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions. It is the most distinguished honor and the highest civilian honor given by the Congress. The legislation must be cosponsored by two-thirds of the Senate and two-thirds of the House. Every Senator is a cosponsor of the Senate bill.

Rep. Jenkins introduced the bill in the U.S. House of Representatives. Currently, it has 73 bipartisan cosponsors, including the entire Kansas delegation: U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), and Reps. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.), Kevin Yoder (R-Kan.) and Ron Estes (R-Kan.).

In addition, a bipartisan group of Senator Dole’s former colleagues who remain in the Senate signed on to the legislation as original cosponsors. They include: Sens. Former Kansas mayor seeks probation for embezzlement

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — A former Lawrence, Kansas, mayor awaiting sentencing for stealing money from a food pantry while he served as the organization’s executive director is asking a federal judge for probation.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports that Jeremy Farmer says in court filings in advance of his scheduled Aug. 15 sentencing that he has cooperated with authorities and maintained a steady job. He believes that merits probation instead of prison time.

Farmer pleaded guilty in September of last year to one count of interstate transportation of stolen funds.

Farmer resigned from Just Food and his elected seat on the Lawrence City Commission in August 2015 after it was revealed that he had not paid more than $50,000 in federal and state payroll taxes on behalf of the nonprofit Lawrence food agency.

Police identify adults, teen wounded in shooting at Kansas home

SHAWNEE COUNTY – Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting that sent three people to a hospital early Wednesday with life-threatening injuries.

Just after 1a.m., Wednesday, police were dispatched to a shooting at a home in the 2900 Block of SE Highland CT., in Topeka, according to a media release.

Upon arrival, police found Virgil Moppin, 38,  Andrea Carter, 39, and Colin Moppin, 15, all of Topeka with gunshot injuries.

Detectives and K-9 processed the crime scene. Police have made no arrests.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Topeka Police.
