Bundy pitches eight strong innings as Orioles beat Royals

BALTIMORE (AP) — Dylan Bundy allowed three hits over a career-high eight innings, newcomer Tim Beckham had two hits and scored twice and the resurgent Baltimore Orioles beat the Kansas City Royals 7-2 Tuesday night for their fourth straight victory.

Seth Smith drove in three runs to help the Orioles move within two games of .500 (52-54) for the first time since July 3.

Kansas City will seek to avoid a three-game sweep on Wednesday. The Royals came to town having won 10 of 11, but they’ve only scored three runs in these two games at Camden Yards.

Bundy (10-8) struck out five and walked one. The right-hander had not pitched more than seven innings in any of his previous 34 major league starts.

All three hits Bundy allowed were singles — none after the third inning — and he retired the final 13 batters he faced. The only run he allowed was unearned.

K-State coach Weber agrees to extension

Kansas State basketball coach Bruce Weber has agreed a two-year contract extension that could keep him with the Wildcats through the 2020-21 season.

Weber had two years left on an extension he signed in April 2013.

Weber was on the hot seat last season before leading the Wildcats to 21 wins and a win over Wake Forest in a First Four game in the NCAA Tournament.

Compensation terms for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons will remain per an extension Weber signed in April 2013. The sixth-year head coach will be paid $2.15 million for the 2017-18 season, $2.25 million in 2018-19, $2.35 million in 2019-20 and $2.45 million in 2020-21.

Hired on March 31, 2012 as the 24th head coach in school history, Weber has guided K-State to a 100-68 (.595) overall record and three NCAA Tournament appearances in five seasons, including a record-setting inaugural campaign in 2012-13 in which he helped the school to its first conference championship in 36 seasons.

Kansas man admits using false W-2 forms in tax fraud scheme

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A Kansas man pleaded guilty to participating in a conspiracy that tried to obtain about $445,000 in fraudulent federal income tax returns.

Acting U.S. Attorney Tom Larson said in a news release that 24-year-old Orville Frame Jr., of Topeka, pleaded guilty Tuesday in federal court in Missouri. The scheme used false W-2 forms to file fraudulent federal and state income tax returns.

Prosecutors say Frame and a co-defendant, 37-year-old Byron Meeks of Topeka, attempted to obtain about $445,000 but received only $10,945 from one federal refund and $3,389 in a Kansas state tax refund.

Meeks was sentenced in April to five years in federal prison without parole.

Frame faces a sentence of up to 10 years in federal prison without parole. A sentencing date has not been scheduled.

Sunflower Early Education Center schedules open house for preschool

This photo illustrates a fun time chasing bubbles during the Summer Discovery program at Sunflower’s Incredible Years Preschool.

The Sunflower Diversified Services programs that serve infants, toddlers and preschoolers have scheduled an upcoming event for local and area families. An open house at Incredible Years Preschool is from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14.

Sunflower’s Early Education Center (EEC) is located at 1312 Patton in Great Bend. It houses both Incredible Years Preschool and a tiny-k early intervention program, serving children 0-3 years old.

“Our preschool open house is an opportunity for parents and children to meet the staff and become familiar with the classroom,” Director Shari Schneider said. “The children are able to explore the new environment while still having the support of their parents.

“This helps children, as well as parents, feel more comfortable separating on the first day,” she continued. “We currently provide three class sessions and children attend 2-4 days a week, depending on their age. We welcome anyone who wants to learn more about what our preschool has to offer.”

Tuition is based on a sliding-fee scale, making preschool accessible to more families with children ages 2-and- a-half to 5. The curriculum at Incredible Years focuses on: free play; social/emotional development; language, literature and communication; arts and sciences; and physical development.

Zoo Phonics, which promotes understanding and memory, is part of the preschool’s program. It is used in reading, spelling and writing.

“In addition, our low student-to- teacher ratio allows us to provide more small group activities and one-on- one support,” Schneider noted. “We are planning even more experiments and hands-on activities this year.

“Our staff also collaborates with community partners such as our tiny-k program at EEC and Helping Hands Preschool to provide screenings, evaluations and services as needed.”

Kansas collects $7.6M more in taxes than expected in July

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas says it collected $7.6 million more in taxes than anticipated in July during its first month under an income tax increase approved by legislators.

The Department of Revenue reported Tuesday that the state collected $453.5 million in taxes. That’s 1.7 percent more than the official projection of almost $446 million.

The surplus in July collections came after the state ended its 2017 fiscal year on June 30 with tax collections exceeding expectations by $72 million, or 1.3 percent. Total tax collections for fiscal 2017 surpassed $5.8 billion.

Lawmakers enacted the income tax increase over Republican Gov. Sam Brownback’s veto to raise an additional $1.2 billion over two years.

Brownback budget director Shawn Sullivan tweeted that it’s too early to tell whether the tax increase will generate what is expected.
