FHSU sees increase; overall enrollment at state universities down

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas Board of Regents says enrollment at public universities fell less than 1 percent this fall.

Enrollment figures released Friday show enrollment increased more than 3 percent at Fort Hays State University and Wichita State University. The University of Kansas reported a 1.1 percent increase in fall enrollment compared with last fall.

Kansas State University reported the largest enrollment drop, of 4.1 percent. Emporia State’s enrollment declined 2.6 percent and enrollment was down 2.7 percent at Pittsburg State.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports cumulative enrollment at the six state universities was down 239 students, or 0.25 percent.

The 19 community colleges in Kansas reported 1,500 fewer students enrolled, while the state’s technical colleges added nearly 1,000 students.

UPDATE: Kan. man fatally shot by police had served time in prison

White-photo KDOC

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Records show that a black man fatally shot by two police officers in Kansas’ capital was months out of prison after serving time on burglary and illegal gun possession charges.

Authorities confirmed Friday that 30-year-old Dominique Tyrell White had a criminal record and spent almost two years in prison starting in 2015.

White died Thursday. Topeka police said he struggled with officers responding to a reported disturbance near a park, tried to flee and reached for a pocket containing a handgun.

Authorities haven’t identified the officers.

Department of Corrections records showed White went to prison in 2015 for felony burglary and was discharged in August 2016.

The records show he returned to prison in October 2016 for illegal possession of a firearm as a felon and was released in May.

Friday Mid America Sports Update

ST. LOUIS (AP) – The St. Louis Cardinals were eliminated from postseason contention when Leonys Martin leaped at the center-field fence to rob Paul DeJong of a tying home run with two outs in the 11th inning, preserving the Chicago Cubs’ 2-1 win. St. Louis, which went 5-14 against its rival, missed the playoffs in consecutive seasons for the first time since 2007 and 2008.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Daniel Norris and the Detroit Tigers ended losing skids. Norris threw five scoreless innings to pick up his first victory in more than three months as the Tigers snapped a season-high nine-game losing streak by beating the Kansas City Royals 4-1.

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Shane Buechele threw for 171 yards and a score and Texas opened Big 12 play by beating Iowa State 17-7. Chris Warren III added a rushing TD for the Longhorns, who improved to 13-2 against the Cyclones. Warren had an 11-yard touchdown run and Toneil Carter caught a 22-yard TD pass from Buechele to give Texas a 14-0 halftime lead its defense made stand up.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Redskins romped past Oakland last week behind a big game from Kirk Cousins. The Chiefs are one of two unbeaten teams left in the NFL after dismantling the Chargers heading into Week 4. The teams meet Monday night at Arrowhead Stadium in one of the league’s marquee showdowns.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) – Michigan State hosts Iowa this weekend in a rematch of the 2015 Big Ten title game, which the Spartans won in the final minute to advance to college football’s playoff. Both teams enter this game coming off losses – and with work to do if they want to return to the heights they reached two seasons ago.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs cornerback Terrance Mitchell had to picks of Philip Rivers last week, not to mention nine tackles and four pass breakups. It was the kind of effort that just might make the fourth-year journeyman known for being more than just the guy opposite Marcus Peters in the Kansas City secondary.

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) – Tight end Jordan Reed expects to play for the Washington Redskins against the Kansas City Chiefs. Reed missed the Redskins’ Week 3 victory over the Oakland Raiders with a chest-rib injury. He took part in more team drills at practice than before and voiced optimism about being ready for the Monday night matchup with Kansas City.

Tigers snap 9-game losing streak, top Royals 4-1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Daniel Norris threw five scoreless innings to pick up his first victory in more than three months as the Detroit Tigers snapped a season-high nine-game losing streak by beating the Kansas City Royals 4-1 on Thursday night.

Norris (5-8) gave up two hits in five innings. He was 0-4 in four starts and four relief appearances since a June 16 triumph over Tampa Bay.

The Tigers had been outscored 68-39 in their losing streak, which was their longest since dropping nine straight Sept. 1-9, 2005.

Nicholas Castellanos’ fifth-inning double with the bases loaded scored Alex Presley, JaCoby Jones and Dixon Machado. Jones singled home Andrew Romine with the first run of the inning.

Royals left-hander Danny Duffy (9-10) did not make it through the inning. Duffy was charged with four runs, six hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings. Duffy, who was the Royals’ opening day starter, finishes the season with a 3.81 ERA in 24 starts.
