New full-time Administrator not expected until after the first of the year

While the City of Great Bend continues to search for a new interim City Administrator, a full time administrator will not likely be hired until after the first of the year. That’s according to City Attorney Bob Sulter who is currently filling the spot vacated by Howard Partington who retired in August.

Suelter says they are conducting interviews this week to find someone to serve on an interim basis, but says the city will likely wait until after the November elections to find a full-time replacement.

Meanwhile, the city is moving forward with hiring a new Fire Chief to replace the retired Mike Napolitano and replacing council member Wayne Henneke who resigned his position during the height of the Cliff Couch controversy.

Suelter, who was a guest Wednesday on “City Edition” on 1590 KVGB AND 97.7 FM, said there are three candidates for the open Fire Chief position and all three are currently on staff.

Prosecutors appeal gun ruling in alleged Kan. domestic terror plot

Gavin Wright, Curtis Allen and Patrick Stein are charged with domestic terrorism

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Federal prosecutors are appealing a judge’s decision to throw out a firearms charge against a man accused of plotting to attack Somali immigrants in a meatpacking town in western Kansas.

U.S. District Judge Eric Melgren in August dismissed a firearms charge against Curtis Allen along with evidence upon which that charge is based.

The government appealed that ruling Tuesday. Prosecutors contend that the evidence is substantial proof of a material fact in the case.

Allen and co-defendants Patrick Stein and Gavin Wright still face charges of conspiring to detonate truck bombs at an apartment complex in Garden City where Somali immigrants live. All three have pleaded not guilty.

The U.S. attorney’s office said Wednesday that prosecutors do not expect the appeal to delay the Feb. 20 trial.

Fatal bicycle accident takes the life of an Ellinwood man

An Ellinwood man was pronounced dead after the bicycle he was riding was struck by a pickup Tuesday morning.

The fatal accident was reported at 11:07 a.m. in the 500 block of East E Street in Ellinwood near the Lakin Comanche Cemetery. Ellinwood Police Chief Art Keffer says the bike rider was traveling west on E Street but was riding against traffic in the eastbound lane when he made an abrupt turn to the north and was struck by a 2006 Chevy Silverado in the westbound lane. Vehicles were approaching the bicyclist, age 79, from both directions when the rider turned towards the cemetery area and was struck into the ditch by the pickup.

The bicyclist, who recently moved back to Ellinwood, was pronounced dead at the scene from a local coroner.

The fatal incident is being ruled an accident with no charges placed on the driver.

Target issues recall for dressers that can tip over

NEW YORK (AP) — Target says it is recalling nearly 180,000 dressers because they can tip over and pose a risk to children.

The Minneapolis retailer said Wednesday that it has received 12 reports of its Room Essentials four-drawer dressers falling over or collapsing. Two 3-year-old children were struck by a dresser, but no injuries have been reported.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says customers should stop using the $118 dresser immediately and return it to any Target store for a full refund.

About 175,000 of the dressers were sold in the U.S., and 3,000 were sold in Canada.

The dressers, which were sold at Target Corp. stores and Target.com between January 2013 and April 2016, came in three colors: black, espresso and maple.
