Big 12 Sports Udpate

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) – Quarterback Baker Mayfield has apologized for planting Oklahoma’s flag at midfield of Ohio State’s stadium following the Sooners’ victory over the Buckeyes. After Saturday night’s win, Mayfield ran around the field at Ohio Stadium with a crimson OU flag, took it to the “O” at midfield and stuck it in the ground. Mayfield says he didn’t mean any disrespect.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Texas coach Tom Herman isn’t saying who will start at quarterback against No. 4 Southern Cal this weekend. Herman says regular starter Shane Buechele must come back from a sore shoulder – but even if he does, freshman Sam Ehlinger could still win the job. Buechele sat out last week’s 56-0 win over San Jose State. Ehlinger got the start and threw for 222 yards while sharing snaps with wide receiver Jerrod Heard, a former quarterback. The game is Saturday in Los Angeles.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) – David Sills is making his mark as a wide receiver at West Virginia after starting out in college as a quarterback. Sills is among the nation’s most productive receivers with five touchdown catches in two games. He’ll be looking for more when West Virginia hosts Delaware State on Saturday.

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Though the season is just a few weeks old, Iowa State appears to have a Big 12-caliber offense. Sophomore running back David Montgomery is a big reason why. Montgomery has rushed for 194 yards and three touchdowns. He also caught five passes for 53 yards in last weekend’s 44-41 overtime loss to Iowa. Iowa State faces Akron this weekend.

WACO, Texas (AP) – Baylor is making a change at quarterback after losing its first two games under new coach Matt Rhule. The coach says sophomore Zach Smith will start when the Bears play Saturday at Duke. Anu Solomon, a graduate transfer from Arizona, started the first two games against Liberty and UTSA.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) – Oklahoma defensive lineman Amani Bledsoe has filed a lawsuit against the NCAA regarding a one-year suspension for testing positive for performance enhancing drugs. The lawsuit says Bledsoe ran out of a supplement and took some of a teammate’s supplement last year before submitting to a random NCAA drug test. Bledsoe was suspended last season and his appeal was denied.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — A library on the University of Kansas campus now offers gender-inclusive restrooms.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports that the Watson Library has debuted two private, non-gendered bathrooms this semester.

Dean of Libraries Kevin Smith says the renovations create a more welcoming space for those who don’t identify with traditional binary genders. He says the response has overall been very positive.

Smith says the staff-led restroom renovation project is part of the university libraries’ Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives.

Other bathrooms in the library have also been renovated to be more accessible to those with disabilities.

Smith says the Spencer Research Library is also planning to add single-user restrooms similar to the new restrooms in the Watson Library.

Great Bend schools look to go Title I district wide

It did not take the USD 428 Board of Education long to determine it was in the best interest of the Great Bend school district to apply to become Title I district wide.

While the majority of education funding comes from local and state government, districts like Great Bend can receive hundreds of thousands of dollars through federal aid like Title I. The program provides supplemental support to students in high-poverty schools.

Tricia Reiser, USD 428 Director of Teacher and Learning, says the district already meets the criteria to become Title I district wide.

Presently, the five elementary schools in Great Bend are Title I buildings, the status change would include the middle school and high school. The purpose of Title I is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education.

USD 428 Assistant Superintendent John Popp told the school board that adding the secondary schools to the Title I label would not mean additional funds, but it would provide flexibility on how the federal money was spent across the district.

Currently, the Title I money can only be spent at the grade school level. One of the parts in the criteria to become Title I is to have over 40 percent of the district’s students in poverty. USD 428 received $810,546 from Title I assistance this year with approximately 70 percent of their students living in the categorized poverty level receiving free or reduced-priced lunches. With no additional federal funds, the Title I money will get divided among all seven buildings instead of just the five elementary buildings.

The school board voted 7-0 to approve the change to Title I district wide.
