Kansas man dies after ejected in truck, trailer crash

HASKELL COUNTY — A Kansas man died in an accident just before 3:30 Thursday in Haskell County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1991 GMC truck driven by Austin Samuel Holteen, 23, Wichita, was southbound on Road OO two miles east of U.S. 83.

The truck struck the trailer of a 2015 Mack truck driven by Orlando Mata-Orozco, 37, Johnson, that was eastbound on Road 100.

Holteen was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. He was transported to Weeks Funeral Home.

Mata-Orozco was not injured.  Both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

Big 12 Sports Update

UNDATED (AP) – Hurricane Irma has shut down the top teams from the Sunshine State, but college football will be played around much of the country Saturday. It has a chance to be significant weekend for sorting out presumed College Football Playoff contenders. Four games match ranked teams.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Ohio State’s game against Oklahoma on Saturday will feature two potential Heisman trophy candidates in quarterbacks J.T. Barrett and Baker Mayfield. The marquee battle will probably be in the trenches when the Sooners have the ball. Oklahoma’s five returning starters on the offensive line are gearing up to face the Buckeyes’ defensive front, one of the best in the nation. Ohio State’s D-line hopes to contain Mayfield, who has a knack for finding receivers downfield after fleeing the pocket.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Texas is looking for a big rebound after a deflating loss to Maryland in Tom Herman’s coaching debut with the Longhorns. Herman faced a lot of tough questions after the loss and the only answer that will soothe Longhorns fans is a convincing win over San Jose State on Saturday. A problem for Texas is the sore throwing shoulder of starting quarterback Shane Buechele. He hasn’t practice since the first game. Freshman Sam Ehlinger will start if Buechele can’t play.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Texas starting quarterback Shane Buechele did not throw in practice again because of a bruised shoulder, and coach Tom Herman says his status against San Jose State will be a game-day decision. Buechele passed for 375 yards and 2 touchdowns in last week’s loss to Maryland. He hasn’t thrown in practice since then. Freshman Sam Ehlinger will start if Buechele can’t play.

WACO, Texas (AP) – There were setbacks for new Baylor coach Matt Rhule at Temple before consecutive 10-win seasons and an AAC title. The Bears stay home for their second game under Rhule after losing to FCS team Liberty. They play UTSA, which is playing its season opener after last week’s scheduled home game against Houston was canceled because of Hurricane Harvey. In Rhule’s first season at Temple in 2013, the Owls had a home loss to FCS team Fordham.

UNDATED (AP) – Defending Big 12 champion Oklahoma has won 11 games in a row since its last game against Ohio State. The fifth-ranked Sooners put the nation’s longest winning streak on the line when they travel to the second-ranked Buckeyes’ famed Horseshoe. Oklahoma went on to win the Big 12 title without a league loss after going 1-2 in nonconference play last year. That included the three-touchdown loss at home to the Buckeyes.

UNDATED (AP) – The Big 12 is going to need some notable wins out of conference now to show it is deserving of a playoff spot in December. The league isn’t off to a promising start, losing its only two games the opening weekend against teams from other Power Five conferences. Ten-time Big 12 champion Oklahoma gets a chance for a big win when it travels to Ohio State. The fifth-ranked Sooners have won a nation’s-best 11 straight games since a three-touchdown loss at home to the Buckeyes last season.

Mistakes doom Patriots defense in 42-27 loss to Chiefs

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) – So much for another stab at 19-0.

Seven months after shutting down the Atlanta Falcons late in a dramatic Super Bowl comeback win, the New England Patriots defense couldn’t find the brakes Thursday night, giving up 28 second-half points in a stunning 42-27 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. It was the most points allowed by New England under coach Bill Belichick, with Kansas City piling up 537 yards on offense.

The Patriots also lost starting linebacker Dont’a Hightower to a knee injury. The defense was already weaker up front following the retirement of veteran linebacker Rob Ninkovich and the departure of defensive end Chris Long in free agency, so Hightower’s absence could be an especially destabilizing blow.

Long strikes proved the biggest problem, including a 75-yard touchdown catch by Tyreek Hill to give Kansas City its first lead early in the third quarter, and a 78-yard touchdown catch by Kareem Hunt in the fourth quarter that put the Chiefs back in front for good.

The secondary blundered throughout. Cornerback Malcolm Butler’s pass interference in the end zone set up Hunt’s 3-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter. Stephon Gilmore also badly blew a coverage on Hill’s long touchdown. And with Hightower sidelined, linebacker Kyle Van Noy and defensive end Cassius Marsh allowed Hunt to get behind the defense on his 78-yard romp.

“It was different things on each one,” safety Devin McCourty said. “I gave up one where I could have definitely played better. But we gotta watch it and see.”

It was a particularly humbling debut for Gilmore, who signed a five-year, $65 million contract as a free agent this offseason. The Patriots hoped he and Butler would make a formidable duo.

Instead, they both looked pedestrian Thursday, with both caught at times seeking help over the top that didn’t come.

“You gotta play with a hungry attitude, and I don’t think we did that as a team,” Gilmore said.

The Patriots offense looked as expected at times, scoring two early touchdowns and taking a 17-7 lead with quick-strike drives and Brady spreading the ball around the field.

Other times they were stagnant, including getting stopped twice on fourth-down runs.

But tight end Rob Gronkowski said the shortcomings were hardly just a defensive problem. He said everything about the loss was “a wakeup call.”

They were left with nothing to do but look forward to their Week 2 trip to New Orleans.

“When they score 42 points and beat you on opening night, there aren’t really any positives,” safety Duron Harmon said.

RARE COMPANY: Since Belichick’s first season in New England in 2000, only two quarterbacks have passed for at least 300 yards and four touchdowns without an interception: Drew Brees in 2009, and now Alex Smith, who passed for 368 yards and four scores.

SUPER BOWL TURNAROUND? The last three times the Patriots lost their opener they went on the win the Super Bowl. They bounced back to win the championship in 2001, 2003, 2014.

BERRY OUT: Chiefs safety Eric Berry left the game with what coach Andy Reid feared was a torn Achilles tendon that would keep him out for the rest of the season. But the coach said the injury didn’t spoil the mood in the locker room.

“Eric’s not going to allow that to happen,” Reid said, adding that the four-time Pro Bowl selection would remain part of the team. “I told him to get his coaching career started.”

BANNER NIGHT: Patriots fans came to celebrate the unveiling of a fifth Super Bowl banner and to boo Commissioner Roger Goodell, still angry about the interminable “Deflategate” scandal that resulted in Brady’s four-game suspension.

But few in the crowd remained when the Chiefs celebrated at the end of the game.

“You can’t take for granted how talented, how well-coached, how skilled and how tough teams are,” Patriots offensive lineman Nate Solder said. “We’ve got to give everything we’ve got to win a game.”

SIGNS OF AGING? In his first game as a 40-year-old, Brady completed 16 of 36 passes for 267 yards and zero touchdowns. His .444 completion percentage was the sixth-worst in his 272-game career (including playoffs).

“We had it handed to us on our own field,” he said. “It’s a terrible feeling, and the only people that can do something about it are in that locker room. We’ve got to dig a lot deeper than we did, because we didn’t dig very deep tonight.”

Tigers knock off No. 13 Central Missouri

HAYS, Kan. – Jacob Mezera threw three touchdown passes, two of them to Layne Bieberle, and the Fort Hays State defense held Central Missouri to 31 rushing yards as the Tigers knocked off No. 13 Mules 35-6 Thursday night at Lewis Field. Mezera completed 18 of 31 passes for 227 yards. Bieberle had four receptions for 107 yards as the Tigers win only their fifth game over a ranked opponent since joining Division II in the early 90s.

The Tiger defense held the Mules to 304 yards and sacked Mules quarterback Brook Bolles three times.

FHSU (2-0) raced out to a 21-3 halftime lead, scoring on a 31 yard Kenneth Iheme run on their first possession. Harley Hazlett’s one-yard run early in the second quarter made it 14-0. Monterio Burchfield hauled in a four-yard pass to give the Tigers a three touchdown lead with 5:10 to play in the first half.

Central Missouri (1-1) moved the ball inside the red zone on their next three possessions but managed just two field goals.

Up 21-6, Mezera connected with Bieberle on a 71-yard touchdown strike to push the Tigers lead to 28-7. Beiberle then caught a 7-yard pass for the games final points.

Charles Tigner rushed for 70 yards on 10 carries. Kenneth Iheme ran for 65 yards on 13 carries with a touchdown. Tyler Bacon had six receptions for 43 yards.

Twins score 3 off Herrera in ninth to stun Royals, 4-2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Twins’ Jorge Polanco drove in the go-ahead runs off ailing Kansas City closer Kelvin Herrera with two outs in the ninth inning, and Minnesota rallied to beat the Royals 4-2 on Thursday night.

Herrera, who has been dealing with a mild forearm strain, inherited a 2-1 lead before giving up a pair of singles and a walk. Brian Dozier hit a tying sacrifice fly, and after Joe Mauer was walked intentionally, Polanco lined a single up the middle for the lead.

Trevor Hildenberger (3-2) earned the win with a scoreless eighth in relief of Twins starter Kyle Gibson, while Matt Belisle handled a perfect ninth to pick up his sixth save.

Kansas, other states want anti-abortion group’s videos released

PHOENIX (AP) — Attorneys general in 20 Republican states including Kansas are urging the U.S. Supreme Court to allow the release of videos made by an anti-abortion group whose leaders are facing felony charges in California for recording people without permission.

The friend-of-the-court brief filed by Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich on Thursday says the justices should lift an order from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals barring the recordings’ release. They were made by the Center for Medical Progress at meetings of an abortion provider association.

The group previously released several secretly recorded videos that it says show Planned Parenthood employees illegally selling fetal tissue. Planned Parenthood says they were deceptively edited to support false claims.

Brnovich’s filing says upholding the 9th Circuit decision will hamper law enforcement’s ability to investigate potential crimes.

In addition to Kansas, the other states joining Brnovich’s brief are Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana,  Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Equifax: Data from millions of Americans exposed in hack

ATLANTA (AP) — Credit monitoring company Equifax says a breach exposed social security numbers and other data from about 143 million Americans.

The Atlanta-based company said Thursday that “criminals” exploited a U.S. website application to access files between mid-May and July of this year.

It said consumers’ names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses and, in some cases, driver’s license numbers were exposed. Credit card numbers for about 209,000 U.S. consumers were also accessed.

The company said hackers also accessed some “limited personal information” from British and Canadian residents.

Equifax said it doesn’t believe that any consumers from other countries were affected.
