Barton County Sheriff warning citizens of recent rush of phone scams

Press Release from Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir…

In the past few weeks the Barton County Sheriff’s Office and the Barton County Clerk of the District Court have received several phone calls from individuals who have been told they either have an outstanding warrant, or that they are required to show up for jury duty, or that they need to post bond for somebody. These are all phone scams.

The victim will be instructed to send a money order to a location only later to discover no such warrant or fine existed. Recently the Sheriff’s office investigated the case in which an individual in the county lost approximately $4,000 through a scam that claimed a relative was in jail out-of-state.

We have also had one case where the caller identified themselves as a Sheriff’s officer asking for bond money. Bonds on warrants and fines are never collected by telephone in Barton County or any other county in the state that I’m aware of.

Before you post any bond, pay any fine or send any money to what you believe is a governmental agency, tell the caller you will call them back. Then look up the number of the agency they claim they are from on the internet or from information. Call them back yourself to determine if this is a legitimate business.

In the past we have seen calls from numerous scammers claiming to be from federal agencies such as the DEA or FBI as well as state and local agencies such as local Sheriff’s Office and in this case the Clerk the District Court.

On behalf of myself and the Clerk of the Court, Heather Ward, we ask if you have any questions or doubts please contact our respective offices and we will be more than happy to help you. It is our most sincere desire no citizen is scammed through the fraudulent representation of our offices.

Kansas City (AP) — A suburban Kansas City fire department is calling out a burglar who broke into a station while firefighters were raising money for charity.

The Raytown Fire Protection District described the burglar as a “special kind of person” in a message posted on Facebook. Police responded around 2:30 p.m. on Labor Day after an employee discovered that his wallet and other items were taken from his bedroom at the station. The theft happened while the employee had been participating in a Muscular Dystrophy Association fundraiser.

A surveillance camera caught an image of a suspect with a thin build and red facial hair wearing a Seattle Seahawks hat, white T-shirt and brown shorts. The fire district is asking anyone with information to call police.

Bill Self enters Hall of Fame Friday

LAWRENCE, KS (AP) – Bill Self will officially be inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame this week, and he says he’s been working on his speech since the day he got the phone call.

“Pretty surreal that you would actually get that phone call that you’re going to be inducted to the Hall of Fame while driving down Naismith Drive. So, yeah, that was pretty special,” he said.

Emotional and anxious for what’s to come on Friday, Self said the magnitude of the honor is starting to set in.

“It will probably mean more to me then, then it does now,” he said.

Self is one of the few active coaches inducted into the Hall of Fame.

“I’ve thought about … well, wouldn’t it mean more if I was retired and if I coach until 70. Well then I think it’s probably a little premature, but I understand why they did it, and I’m not giving it back. I’m proud of it,” he said.

Most people get into coaching for the accolades, the recognition and the championships, but Self says for him his favorite memories are about people.

“How they’ve done things in my life and helped me along the path more so than a big moment. But I think 2008’s Mario shot is still up there pretty high,” Self said.

Self found out back in April, and between then and now, he’s had a chance to connect with a lot of his former players and coaches.

He says there are at least 55 players and 15 assistant coaches coming up to be there with him.

Self says he’s looking forward to connecting with them after the ceremony.

Reliever Myles Jaye (1-0) replaced Sanchez and pitched 2 1/3 innings. He allowed one hit, two walks and a wild pitch, leaving in the third inning with the Tigers holding a 7-1 lead.

Jason Vargas (14-10) took the loss, allowing seven earned runs and six hits, a walk and a hit batter in two innings of work.
