Rep. Marshall welcomes congressman wounded baseball practice back to work

Steve Scalise arrived on crutches Thursday morning to a standing ovation in the House Chamber-image CSPAN

WASHINGTON (AP) — The congressman shot in June at a baseball practice is returning to work at the Capitol after three months in the hospital and at a rehabilitation facility.

That’s the word from Majority Whip Steve Scalise’s office. The Louisiana Republican will vote Thursday morning and address his colleagues on the House floor. This is his first public appearance since the shooting.

Scalise and four other people were injured June 14 when a gunman opened fire on a Republican baseball practice in nearby Alexandria, Virginia. U.S. Capitol Police and other officers returned fire and killed the gunman. The rifle-wielding attacker had nursed grievances against President Donald Trump and the GOP.

The 51-year-old congressman was struck in the hip, and the bullet tore into blood vessels, bones and internal organs.

Brownback has Senate confirmation hearing date for Trump post

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback says a U.S. Senate committee hearing is set for next week on his nomination for ambassador-at-large for international religious freedom.

But Brownback told reporters Wednesday he’s not sure how quickly the Senate could vote on his nomination after the Oct. 4 hearing by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

President Donald Trump nominated the two-term Republican governor for the ambassadorship in late July. Brownback said he’ll step down as governor when the Senate confirms him.

Brownback’s departure will automatically elevate fellow Republican Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer to governor. Colyer said Wednesday that his administration will have a different tone, without elaborating.

Brownback already was term-limited. Colyer and seven other candidates have announced campaigns for the Republican nomination for governor in 2018. Five Democrats have said they’re running.

Social media reacts to death of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Playboy magazine founder and sexual revolution symbol Hugh Hefner has died. He was 91.

The magazine released a statement saying Hefner died at his home of natural causes Wednesday night surrounded by family.

Founding the magazine in 1953, Hefner built a brand that defined the sexual culture of the second half of the 20th century.

Playboy’s buxom models were the objects of millions of men’s fantasies as Hefner challenged what he derided as America’s “Puritanical” attitudes toward sex.

For decades, he was the pipe-smoking, silk-pajama-wearing center of a constant fantasy party at Playboy mansions in Chicago and then in Los Angeles.

Thursday Mid America Sports Update

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Addison Russell hit a 3-run homer and John Lackey pitched six strong innings as the Chicago Cubs clinched their second consecutive National League Central title with a 5-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cubs reached the postseason for the third straight year for the first time since 1908.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Paulo Orlando sparked the Kansas City Royals with his glove early and his bat late. Orlando hit a two-run homer, his first of the season, as the Royals rallied from a three-run deficit to beat Detroit 7-4, the Tigers’ ninth straight loss. He also made a superb running catch in the first inning to rob Nicholas Castellanos of an extra-base hit with two runners on base.

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Texas has owned its series with Iowa State, winning 12 of the last 14 games against the Cyclones since the two schools became rivals with the formation of the Big 12. Thursday night’s primetime matchup will offer Iowa State a shot at a marquee home win against a program that has had its number for two decades. The Cyclones will be underdogs in the league opener for both teams.

UNDATED (AP) – In their first full season under coach Mike Yeo, the St. Louis Blues have their sights still set on the Stanley Cup. St. Louis has made the playoffs six consecutive years without reaching the Cup final and will lean on winger Vladimir Tarasenko and Jake Allen to try to get there. With the addition of Brayden Schenn, the Blues have more skill and firepower up front. The Blues open the season Oct. 4 at the home of the Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – One day after revealing $350 million in renovations focused primarily on its football facilities, a Kansas program that has struggled for years got another reason to believe in its future. His name is Khalil Herbert. He ran for 291 yards last weekend against West Virginia, the third-best performance in school history.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – When Chicago Cubs shortstop Addison Russell took out a St. Louis Cardinals fan’s plate of nachos while trying to catch a foul ball, the spectator had no idea he’d end up all over the internet. Andrew Gudermuth says the Cardinals replaced the spilled nachos and gave his group beer and Italian ice. He also says Russell shook his hand and apologized. Now nicknamed “Nacho Man,” he says the attention has made him popular on Twitter.

UNDATED (AP) – Anyone trying to get a read on the Southeastern Conference’s quarterback situation should avoid looking at the league standings. The only two SEC teams with losing records both have clear-cut veteran starting quarterbacks. But the two programs atop the Eastern Division standings have uncertainty at that critical position. How those schools sort out their quarterback situations could go a long way toward determining the eventual East champion.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Paulo Orlando hit a two-run homer, his first of the season, as the Kansas City Royals rallied from a three-run deficit to beat the Detroit Tigers 7-4. The Tigers dropped their ninth straight and are 4-22 in September. They have been outscored 68-29 in the skid. The last time Detroit lost nine in a row was Sept. 1-9, 2005.

Royals win 7-4, extend Tigers’ skid to 9 games

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Paulo Orlando hit a two-run homer, his first of the season, as the Kansas City Royals rallied from a three-run deficit to beat Detroit 7-4 on Wednesday night, the Tigers’ ninth straight loss.

The Tigers are 4-22 in September and have been outscored 68-30 in the skid. The last time Detroit lost nine in a row was Sept. 1-9, 2005.

Scott Alexander (5-4), the third Kansas City pitcher, picked up the victory with 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

Drew VerHagen (0-3) gave up the home run to Orlando with Alcides Escobar, who had tripled, aboard.

The Royals padded their lead with a three-run eight, which was highlighted by a two-run double by Escobar. Whit Merrifield scored the first run of the inning on a wild pitch by Chad Bell.

SALINE COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a stolen vehicle and have made an arrest.

Just before 4:30 Wednesday, deputies were dispatched to report of an injury accident at the intersection of Center and First in New Cambria, according to Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan

Kimberly Potts, 46, New Cambria, told deputies she was stopped at the stop sign on Center Street when a vehicle came from the west at a high rate of speed. The driver attempted to turn south on Center and struck the front of her 2002 Dodge Dakota. The vehicle then drove off.

While deputies were working the accident, an 81-year-old New Cambria woman reported that her 2009 Nissan Pathfinder was stolen from her driveway.

She told deputies two teenagers came to her house around 2 a.m., asking for her grandson, who no longer lives at her residence. The boys told the woman that they did not have any place to stay, so she invited them to spend the night. She contacted authorities a couple hours later after she discovered that the boys and the car were missing.

Sheriff Soldan said that the woman was familiar with the boys and provided names. Authorities caught up with them in the community of Solomon a short time later. They told deputies that they had returned the Pathfinder. Deputies the vehicle at the residence with damage to the front and driver’s side.

Deputies took Calob Haymond, 15, and Benny Garza, 14, both of Solomon into custody for deprivation of property. Haymond, who was driving, could face additional charges, according to Sheriff Soldan.

A private vehicle transported Potts to Salina Regional Health Center.

Haymond and Garza are being held at North Central Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Facility in Junction City, according to Soldan.
