TOPEKA — Gregory L. Bauer of Great Bend, Stanley L. DeFries of Topeka, and Derrick L. Roberson of Manhattan were appointed to four-year terms on the Kansas Board for Discipline of Attorneys.

Chief Justice Lawton R. Nuss of the Kansas Supreme Court made the appointments. Their terms end June 30, 2021.

In addition, Nuss designated John D. Gatz of Colby as chair of the board. Gatz had been serving as vice chair. Roberson was named the new vice chair.

The Kansas Disciplinary Administrator’s Office reviews complaints of misconduct against lawyers, conducts investigations, presents cases to the board, and makes recommendations as to the disposition of the complaints.

Gatz and Roberson serve on the review committee, along with at-large member Leslie M. Miller of Lawrence. They review all cases docketed for investigation and issue a report on the disposition of the case, which may be dismissal (with or without a letter of caution), diversion, informal admonition, or institution of formal charges.

Members of the board — made up of lawyers from across the state — meet in three-person panels, which include two board members and one at-large attorney, to conduct hearings in cases where the review committee has found probable cause that a lawyer has violated the Kansas Rules of Professional Conduct and that published discipline is warranted.

Leaving the board are Patricia Dengler of Wichita, who most recently was chair, Randall D. Grisell of Garden City, and Jack Scott McInteer of Wichita.

Other members of the board are:
Kimberly K. Bonifas of Wichita
M. Jennifer Brunetti of Frontenac
Stephen W. Cavanaugh of Topeka
Jeffrey A. Chubb of Independence
Shaye L. Downing of Lawrence
John M. Duma of Olathe
Glenn I. Kerbs of Dodge City
John E. Larson of Shawnee
Kathryn J. Marsh of Leawood
Mira Mdivani of Overland Park
James P. Rankin of Topeka
Bethany J. Roberts of Lawrence
Lee M. Smithyman of Overland Park
Gaye Tibbets of Wichita
Sarah E. Warner of Lawrence
Darcy D. Williamson of Topeka

Cougar Soccer: Women tie; Men lose in Missouri

If the five hour trip to Sedalia, Missouri, wasn’t long enough, the trip back home grew even longer as the Barton Community College soccer teams returned without a victory in taking on State Fair Community College.

In the women’s game the Lady Cougars battled to a double overtime scoreless tie, while the Cougar men despite outshooting the Roadrunners 28-6 fell 1-0 on a last second overtime goal.

The results leave the Lady Cougars at 1-1-1 on the season with its next game coming on Wednesday in a return to conference action for a 5:00 p.m. kick at Dodge City Community College.

The Cougar men suffer their first loss of the season in dropping to 3-1 going into their Sunday contest hosting Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa in a 4:00 p.m. kick-off.

Friday Mid-America Sports Update

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Michael Wacha pitched six strong innings and Randal Grichuk hit a two-run homer as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the San Francisco Giants 5-2 Thursday night. The Giants were without staff ace Madison Bumgarner, a late scratch with flu symptoms, as they lost for the sixth time in seven games.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs have released veteran offensive lineman Jah Reid before Thursday night’s preseason finale against Tennessee, one day after acquiring former first-round pick Cam Erving in a trade with Cleveland. Most expected Erving to assume the swing tackle job that Reid has held down the past two seasons in Kansas City.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – Nebraska is among a half-dozen teams switching to the 3-4 defense with the hope of having the same success with it as Big Ten rival Wisconsin. Associated Press research found that 48 of the 68 power-five conference teams and FBS independents still use the four-man front as their primary alignment.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) – Mason Rudolph threw for 303 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score to help No. 10 Oklahoma State beat Tulsa 59-24. Rudolph completed 20 of 24 passes with no interceptions. The senior joined Brandon Weeden as the only Cowboys quarterbacks to surpass 9,000 yards in career passing.

UNDATED (AP) – The Big 12 has the oldest and youngest coaches in major college football. Kansas State’s Bill Snyder is 77, and new Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley is 33. Riley is one of three 30-something coaches and the other two newcomers are both 42 – Baylor’s Matt Rhule and Tom Herman at Texas. The average age is just under 47, two years younger than any other power league.

UNDATED (AP) – Justin Crawford arrived before fall camp at West Virginia a year ago without the benefit of the program’s offseason conditioning. The junior college transfer sat out most of four games with ankle and knee injuries yet compiled 1,184 rushing yards. With Crawford getting six months of weightlifting and workouts in 2017, coach Dana Holgorsen is optimistic about the prospects for the Big 12’s top returning rusher. No. 22 West Virginia plays No. 21 Virginia Tech on Sunday in Landover, Maryland.

UNDATED (AP) – College football owns Labor Day weekend and has turned it into five-day football holiday. Week 1 features an unprecedented opener between No. 1 Alabama and No. 3 Florida State; No. 17 Florida putting a 27-game winning streak on the line against No. 11 Michigan; Heisman winner Lamar Jackson in an NFL stadium; and a couple of hot seat coaches meeting in the Rose Bowl.

Chiefs backups top Titans reserves 30-6 in preseason finale

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Patrick Mahomes II got his first NFL start on Thursday night.

The Kansas City Chiefs hope it’s his last for a while.

The Chiefs’ first-round pick threw for 183 yards and a touchdown in his preseason finale, helping them to a 30-6 rout of the Tennessee Titans in a game that was played primarily by backups on both sides.

Mahomes got the nod with Alex Smith and the rest of the starters sitting out, and he once more showed why the Chiefs moved up to draft him 10th overall in April. The former Texas Tech standout scrambled to keep plays alive, stood tall in the pocket and used his big arm to make plays downfield.

“This was a good experience for him,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “I thought he handled the last few days well. He knew he was going to start. But now he has to carry that into being a backup.”

His favorite target was second-year pro Demarcus Robinson , who may have locked up the Chiefs’ final wide receiver job. He had three catches for 127 yards, including a 28-yard TD strike just before halftime.

“I feel like I’ve gotten better every single day, and that’s been the plan all along,” said Mahomes, who beat out Tyler Bray for the No. 2 job. “I mean, it’s a process, but you want to make sure you come in every single practice, every single game and improve.”

Rookie wide receiver Jehu Chesson also solidified his roster spot with a weaving, dodging 76-yard punt return touchdown for Kansas City. Backup tight end Gavin Escobar may have done likewise when he hauled in a juggling touchdown catch from Bray late in the third quarter.

Titans coach Mike Mularkey said early in the week that “all 90” would play in the preseason finale, as if an uneven performance last week against Chicago meant his starters would get at least some work.

But after the Chiefs kicked off, it was former quarterback Matt Cassel rather than Marcus Mariota who led the Titans onto the field. Cassel was joined by a flotilla of Tennessee backups, including a couple — such as David Fluellen, who carried 19 times for 74 yards — still trying to earn a job.

“I’m confident in my ability and just hope that the people making the decisions feel the same way,” said wide receiver Tre McBride, who had three catches as he tried to earn one of the Titans’ final roster spots.

On defense, first-round pick Adoree Jackson made a couple of nice plays while trying to earn one of their starting cornerback jobs. He even flashed some good hands by picking a pass on a tipped ball, though a video review showed he landed on the out of bounds line.

“I told our guys I’m actually very proud of them,” Mularkey said, “because I know each and every one of them that played tonight, some of them it’s their last game. They gave their best effort and competed as best they could. At the end of the day that’s all you can ask of yourself when you walk off the field.”

HASKELL COUNTY — A Kansas woman was injured in an accident just before 10p.m. Thursday in Haskell County.
