Great Bend still short on fundraising for 4th of July firework display

Great Bend Community Coordinator Christina Hayes voiced her concern Monday night at the Great Bend City Council meeting that the city was $6,000 short of raising enough money for a fireworks show on the 4th of July.

After eliminating the fireworks display last year because of a lack of fundraiser, the city decided to take on the responsibility of fundraising for the show at the Great Bend Expo Complex.

Letters asking for donations were sent to local businesses at the end of 2017.

Hayes also mentioned a community member asked her why the city does not bid out the firework display shooter each year. Hayes noted the city sticks with contracts of three to five years with a company to run the firework display based on familiarity.

Menges Rental, based out of Ellinwood, is the current firework display shooter. The city always chips in $5,000 for the fireworks.
