Great Bend High School brings in two new inductees to Hall of Fame

Jim Calcara and Larry Becker were honored Friday after getting inducted into the Great Bend High School Hall of Fame.

Calcara graduated from Great Bend in 1961 and went on to become an architect with one of the bigger firms in Kansas City, now known as 360 Architecture. Calcara, a former FFA and 4H student in Great Bend, says his old farm upbringing in Great Bend carried him to where he is today.

Larry Becker graduated from GBHS in 1953. Becker was named Great Bend High School’s first swimming coach, a role he served until his retirement in 2000. He also helped start the local competitive swim club, the Golden Belt Swim Squad while managing many pools during the summer time.

Becker says his interest in swimming may have never happened if it wasn’t for a football injury in college.

Both Calcara and Becker were honored at a luncheon last Friday and at the basketball games against Hays High.
