Hartman Backs Up Kobach NRA Invite With Arena Offer

Wink Hartman, who last week dropped from the Kansas governor’s race and backed Kris Kobach, said he’s offered his arena to the National Rifle Association for its upcoming national convention.

The offer looks to be more gesture than prospective deal. The Hartman Arena in Wichita suburb Park City holds 6,500, about a third of the venue where the NRA convention currently plans to meet in Dallas.

Wink Hartman, left, who pulled out of the Republican governor’s race and is now backing Kris Kobach, is offering his Wichita-area arena to the NRA for its annual convention. The place is probably too small.
NADYA FAULX / KANSAS NEWS SERVICE

But the overture comes after Kobach, the conservative Kansas secretary of state, invited the nation’s most powerful gun rights group to the state. That came as the NRA became a focal point for protests in the wake of a school shooting early this month that left 17 dead in Parkland, Fla., and appeared to awaken gun control forces.

The NRA is currently scheduled to meet in Dallas on May 4. But Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway said the gun lobby group would be “met with opposition” if it carried through on plans to gather at Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in his city.

“I am saying to the NRA, ‘reconsider yourselves coming to Dallas,’” Caraway said during a news conference a week ago. “There will be marches and demonstrations should they come to Dallas and we in Dallas will be the ones to have to bare the costs, the responsibility and to protect the citizens.”

The NRA has not announced any plans to relocate the annual convention, but that hasn’t stopped politicians across the country from trying to woo the NRA to their states. Kobach invited the NRA to bring its convention to Kansas in a tweet over the weekend.

“It’s about the Second Amendment and the rights of the individuals — not only of Kansas but of the United States — to arm themselves and protect themselves,” Hartman said.

Hartman, who said he’s a lifetime member of the NRA, said the group’s state director was grateful but didn’t respond with a final word on the arena offer.

Hartman acknowledged that the offer was largely symbolic, but he wanted to back the NRA.

“I want them to know that there’s a home and they’re welcome here,” said Hartman. “Kansas is a very business-friendly state and I think that projects that.”

Since the Florida shooting, multiple corporations have been cutting ties with the NRA.

K-State loses to TCU 66-59

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) – Kenrich Williams had 16 points and 11 rebounds in his final home game for TCU, leading the Horned Frogs to their first four-game conference winning streak in 20 years with a 66-59 victory against Kansas State on Tuesday night.

Williams stopped a season-high streak of six games without a double-double by recording his 11th of the season. The last four-game league winning streak for the Horned Frogs (21-9, 9-8 Big 12) was in 1997-98, when they went 14-0 in the Western Athletic Conference under Billy Tubbs.

TCU, which pulled even with the Wildcats for fourth place in the conference standings, appears headed to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since that year. Jamie Dixon, a former player for the Horned Frogs, is in his second season as their coach.

A year ago, a seven-game losing streak to finish the regular season cost TCU an NCAA berth before the Horned Frogs won two games in the Big 12 Tournament and took the NIT championship.

Dean Wade scored 24 points for the Wildcats (20-10, 9-8), who missed a chance for 10 conference wins for the first time in five years but are still in good shape for a second straight trip to the NCAAs under Bruce Weber. Barry Brown Jr. had 17 points and six assists.

TCU’s Vladimir Brodziansky, hit his only field goal with 1:49 remaining, a crucial 3-pointer from the top of the key for a 60-56 lead after Desmond Bane had run down a loose ball on the sideline and raced in for the go-ahead layup. Bane scored 15 points, and Brodziansky seven points with three blocks.

BIG PICTURE

Kansas State: It’s been a three-man show offensively with Wade, Brown and Xavier Sneed lately for the Wildcats, who have dropped two straight following a 4-1 stretch that strengthened their NCAA hopes. But Sneed was mostly a no-show, scoring two points on 1-of-6 shooting.

TCU: A streak of three straight games shooting at least 54 percent ended because of a cold second half (36 percent). But the Horned Frogs got hot at the right time, making five straight shots after five straight misses during Kansas State’s 9-0 run.

Regular-season finale for both teams Saturday: Kansas State at home against Baylor and TCU at No. 12 Texas Tech.

Wednesday Sports Headlines

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Jeffrey Carroll scored 21 points, Cameron McGriff had 19 and Oklahoma State cruised past Iowa State 80-71, sweeping the season series with the Cyclones. Mitchell Solomon scored 10 points with 11 rebounds for the Cowboys, who outrebounded Iowa State 47-37 and outscored the Cyclones 32-16 in the paint.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Marcus Foster had 20 points and Khyri Thomas added 16 as Creighton ran away from DePaul in the second half for an 82-57 victory to clinch a top-six seed in the Big East Conference Tournament. Foster drained three from distance to top 300 career treys.

WACO, Texas (AP) – Terry Maston scored 23 points and Baylor beat cold-shooting Oklahoma 87-64. Maston made his first career start on Senior Night, his 102nd game played for the Bears, and made the most of it with a 10-for-14 shooting night despite being saddled with three fouls in the first half. Baylor shot 51 percent as a team and controlled the boards, 44-29.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) – Kenrich Williams had 16 points and 11 rebounds in his final home game for TCU, leading the Horned Frogs to their first four-game conference winning streak in 20 years with a 66-59 victory against Kansas State. Williams stopped a season-high streak of six games without a double-double by recording his 11th of the season.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) – The Big Ten Tournament begins Wednesday, one week earlier than usual at a rather unusual venue: Madison Square Garden in New York. Michigan State is the top seed as the league again ventures outside of its traditional Midwest footprint to play at one of the traditional hubs of college basketball. Ohio State is the second seed, while Purdue and Nebraska round out the top four teams, each getting double byes.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Next month’s NIT games will use experimental rules that include an extended 3-point line, a wider free-throw lane and 10-minute quarters instead of 20-minute halves. The NCAA announced the changes Tuesday. The 3-point arc will move to roughly 22 feet used by FIBA for international competition. The lane will expand from 12 feet to the NBA’s 16 feet.

National Headlines

BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) – The Major League Baseball Players Association has filed a grievance against the Miami Marlins, Oakland Athletics, Pittsburgh Pirates and Tampa Bay Rays. The union accuses the four teams of failing to appropriately spend revenue-sharing money to improve their ballclubs. MLB says the complaint has no merit, while Pirates president Frank Coonelly called the grievance “patently baseless.”

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) – Detroit Lions defensive end Ziggy Ansah has been given the team’s franchise tag. The Lions’ first-round pick in 2013 has 44 sacks, including 12 this past season. The franchise tag means Ansah will make the average of the top five defensive ends this year unless he and the Lions can reach agreement on a long-term package by mid-July.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Eagles punter Donnie Jones has announced his retirement after 14 NFL seasons. Jones played for Seattle, Miami, St. Louis and Houston before joining Philadelphia in 2013. He set an Eagles career record for punters with 70 games played and finishes his career with the third-longest consecutive-games-played streak at 208.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) – Ja’Quan Newton drained a running 30-footer at the horn to give unranked Miami a 91-88 victory over No. 9 North Carolina. Joel Berry II nailed a game-tying 3 with 4.1 seconds remaining, but Miami pushed the ball upcourt for Newton’s shot over Berry. Chris Lykes scored a team-high 18 points for Miami, while Berry matched his career high with 31 points.

UNDATED (AP) – Daniel Gafford’s 21 points and 10 rebounds led Arkansas to a 91-82 victory against 14th-ranked Auburn. Admiral Schofield finished 24 points and No. 16 Tennessee shot 68 percent from the field in the second half of a 76-54 blowout win at Mississippi State. James Demery scored 21 points and Taylor Funk added 17 as Saint Joseph’s handed No. 17 Rhode Island its second loss in four games, 78-48.

CLEVELAND (AP) – LeBron James provided 31 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists as the Cleveland Cavaliers knocked off the Nets, 129-123. It was his 12th triple-double of the season and 67th of his career, but the Cavaliers didn’t take the lead for good until Rodney Hood’s three-point play put Cleveland ahead 123-121 with 40 seconds left. James finished a month averaging a triple-double for the first time in his career, but the Cavs went just 6-4 in February.

Man jailed after puppies found covered in latex paint

KANSAS CITY – Law enforcement authorities are investigating a man on animal abuse charges.

On Saturday, Kansas City Animal Control officers brought the Kansas City Pet Project four puppies after a man was arrested at a home in Kansas City on charges of alleged domestic violence and animal abuse, according to a social media report from the shelter.

The puppies were found covered in thick latex paint. Our veterinary team worked late into the evening examining them for injuries and analyzing how to remove the paint.

The only safe alternative was to shave off all of their paint-laden fur. Following their shave, the puppies were resting comfortably and being cared for in the shelter’s veterinary care center.

Late Tuesday, the shelter reported one of the puppies had been adopted. Three are recovering and will be available for adoption.

Authorities did not release the name of the suspect.

Kansas woman charged with 16 laundry room burglaries

SEDGWICK COUNTY – Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on burglary charges.

Roberts-photo KDOC

Through an investigation detectives and officers observed a trend of burglaries at apartment complex laundry rooms and public laundry rooms across Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson. The locks on the washers and driers were being drilled out and suspects were taking the money from the lock boxes.

Sixteen cases were reported from November 21 of 2017 through January 5 of 2018, according to Davidson.

Detectives and officers worked together sharing information from each case. The teamwork helped them identify 25-year-old Taylor Roberts and 32-year old Kyle Miller. Authorities have charged them with 33 counts of destruction of property, non-residential burglary and theft, according to Davidson.

Police also credited business owners and tips from residents in helping them solve the case.

Roberts has four previous convictions for burglary and theft, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.
