Stewart had 2 homers, 6 RBIs as Tigers beat Royals 11-8

DETROIT (AP) — Detroit Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire watched Christin Stewart put on a show in batting practice and thought his rookie slugger might have a big night.

Gardenhire got even more than he expected.

Stewart hit his first career homer in the first inning, hit another home run in the second inning and drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh as the Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 11-8 on Thursday night.

“The ball was flying out in BP, especially when he was hitting them, so I had a feeling he might have a big night,” Gardenhire said. “What he did tonight is the reason he’s considered one of our top prospects.”

Stewart, a September call-up playing in his 11th game, became the first Tigers rookie to drive in six runs in a game since Ryan Raburn had seven against the Chicago White Sox on July 25, 2007.

“I felt great before the game, but there are days you have a great BP and a terrible game, so I didn’t want to get too confident,” he said. “It was an awesome feeling, though.”

Six Tigers had at least two hits and Detroit snapped a seven-game home losing streak.

Kansas City lost its fifth straight despite hitting three doubles and four homers.

“We swung the bats well,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “We just didn’t pitch well.”

The Tigers led 9-5 after two innings as the teams combined for five home runs, six doubles, a triple and a double steal. By that point, both starting pitchers were gone.

Detroit’s Matthew Boyd allowed five runs while getting four outs.

“Gardy definitely made the right move getting me out of there,” Boyd said. “I just didn’t have anything out there.”

Kansas City’s Jorge Lopez (2-5) gave up seven runs without getting an out in the second.

“I was up from the first pitch I threw,” he said. “The plan was to keep the ball down, but I couldn’t make pitches.”

Zac Reininger (1-0), the second of seven Detroit pitchers, picked up his first major-league victory.

Jorge Bonifacio gave the Royals the lead with a three-run homer off Boyd in the first, but the Tigers came back with four in the bottom of the inning. Stewart hit a two-run homer just over the right-field fence and Nicholas Castellanos hit the next pitch to nearly the same spot.

Grayson Greiner made it 4-3 with a sacrifice fly later in the inning, and the runs kept coming in the second. Brian Goodwin gave the Royals a 5-4 lead with a two-run homer in the top of the inning, but Stewart made it five RBIs in two innings with a long three-run home run in the Tigers’ second.

“I was running to first and praying on the first one because I didn’t know if it was going to get out,” said Stewart, who has 83 minor-league homers in the last three seasons. “The second one, I knew it was gone.”

Glenn Sparkman replaced Lopez and gave up a triple to Castellanos and Victor Martinez’s RBI double before getting the first out of the second inning. Greiner picked up his second RBI with a two-out single, giving the Tigers a 9-5 lead.

Hunter Dozier hit a two-run homer off Reininger in the fourth, pulling the Royals within 9-7, but the next four relievers combined for 4 1/3 scoreless innings as Detroit maintained the lead into the ninth inning.

“We didn’t want to use that many arms in the first game of a four-game series, but they did the job,” Gardenhire said.

Stewart walked with the bases loaded in the seventh for his sixth RBI.

Adalberto Mondesi homered off Shane Greene in the ninth to make it 11-8.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Tigers: INF Niko Goodrum (quad) and 3B Jeimer Candelario (back) both took grounders before the game. Gardenhire said Candelario could play as soon as Saturday with Goodrum possibly returning Monday.

V-MART KEEPS HIS RECORD

In the first inning, Victor Martinez lined a ball into the right-center field gap – the perfect place for a triple at spacious Comerica Park – but his lack of speed turned it into a double. With nine games left in his final season, Martinez has 3,937 plate appearances for the Tigers without hitting a triple, the most in franchise history. Aaron Robinson is second with 868.

STEWART’S BIG DAY

Stewart came within inches of an even more memorable game. In the seventh, with the bases loaded and a 3-2 count, he lined a Brandon Maurer slider into the right-field corner for what looked like a bases-clearing double.

That would have tied Harry Heilmann and Jim Northrup’s franchise record of eight RBIs in a game, but the ball sliced just foul. He drew the bases-loaded walk on the next pitch.

“That was a great at-bat,” Gardenhire said. “He got a 3-2 pitch he could drive, then came right back and had the patience to take the walk.”

UP NEXT

The teams continue their four-game series on Friday night, with Ian Kennedy (2-8, 4.73) starting against Detroit’s Francisco Liriano (5-10, 4.54).

Friday Sports Headlines

AMES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa State community will close out a horrible week by coming together to watch the Cyclones at Jack Trice Stadium on Saturday. The game against Akron will be more about helping the school, alumni and fans remember one of their own than football. Former Big 12 champion golfer Celia Barquin Arozamena was found stabbed to death while playing golf at a local course earlier in the week and the team plans to honor her by wearing a helmet decal.

DETROIT (AP) — Christin Stewart hit his first two big-league homers and drove in six runs Thursday night, leading the Detroit Tigers past the Kansas City Royals 11-8. Stewart, a September call-up playing in his 11th game, became the first Tigers rookie to drive in six runs in a game since Ryan Raburn had seven against the Chicago White Sox on July 25, 2007.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has already won three games on the road. Now, he’ll try to win one at Arrowhead Stadium. The young record-setting quarterback makes his home debut on Sunday against San Francisco, which boasts its own dynamic young signal-caller in Jimmy Garoppolo. It’s a meeting of two teams that appear to be on the rise.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have poured draft picks and free-agent money into building their offensive line, and so far it has paid off. Not only did the group help Kareem Hunt win the NFL’s rushing title last year, it has been nearly perfecting in protecting Patrick Mahomes. The group has allowed just two sacks through the first two weeks of the season.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — It might be strange for longtime college football fans to imagine that Oklahoma’s roster is almost completely unfamiliar with the triple option offense. The Sooners ran it out of the wishbone formation to win national championships in 1974, 1975 and 1985 under coach Barry Switzer. It’s rarely seen today. That made Army’s offense difficult to simulate in practice as the fifth-ranked Sooners prepared to host the Black Knights.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The Texas Longhorns are looking to prove they’re back and end a run of domination by Big 12 rival No. 17 TCU. The Horned Frogs have turned the old rivalry upside down with 4 straight wins. The game is the Big 12 opener for both teams and the winner emerges as a conference title contender. That’s a status the Longhorns haven’t had for years. But Texas is coming off a big win last week over USC and are feeling confident they can make a big run.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Alan Bowman is the latest Texas Tech quarterback to make a big mark early in their career. Bowman threw for 605 yards and five touchdowns last week in a win over Houston. Coach Kliff Kingsbury says he’s impressed by Bowman’s ability to limit his mistakes. He has eight touchdown passes and has yet to throw an interception. Bowman is among a crop of young stars emerging in the Big 12.

National Headlines

MIAMI (AP) — Miami Marlins CEO Derek Jeter is hinting that manager Don Mattingly is expected to return next year as the ballclub continues its latest rebuilding effort. When asked about Mattingly’s status for 2019, Jeter said, “He’s under contract.” Mattingly took over before the 2016 season and is 215-259 with Miami, including a 59-92 mark this year.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Billie Jean King and partner Ilana Kloss have joined the Dodgers ownership group. The tennis great says Dodgers owner and chairman Mark Walter and the organization have proven to be leaders in sports on and off the field. Walter says he’s proud to welcome “two trailblazing athletes, social advocates and business women.”

ATLANTA (AP) — Tiger Woods and Rickie Fowler share the lead through one round of the Tour Championship in Atlanta. Woods made an eagle putt from just over 25 feet on the par-5 18th hole for a 5-under 65. World No. 1 Justin Rose and Gary Woodland are one stroke back and one ahead of Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Tony Finau.

Letter courtesy USD 210

STEVEN COUNTY —Officials with USD 210 Hugoton reported Thursday afternoon that the cases of meningitis are viral and not the more serious bacterial meningitis, according to the KDHE.

————-

STEVENS COUNTY —Officials with USD 210 in Hugoton are reporting a student with bacterial meningitis.  According to a letter sent to parents, Hugoton Middle School officials were notified Wednesday afternoon about the student who was locally diagnosed.

The letter informs parents that meningitis causes inflammation of the tissue surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Bacterial meningitis is a serious that can cause brain damage and death. It is often spread from person to person by eating or drinking after someone with the infection.

In many cases, early stages of meningitis are similar to the flu. Symptoms typically develop over 3-7 days after being exposed, according to the letter to parents. Early treatment can prevent serious complications.

The letter urges parents to seek immediate medical care if their student has any of the symptoms including  sudden high fever, stiff neck, severe headache, confusion, difficulty concentrating or vomiting.

To prevent meningitis, the letter reminds everyone should wash hands; don’t share drinks, food straws, eating utensils, lip balm or other items; cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze and learn more about meningitis vaccines.

49-year-old Derrick Bohnenkemper, of Holton, is charged with first-degree murder and six other felonies in the death of 73-year-old Gaylen Bohnenkemper. Police responded Tuesday after a 911 caller said her son had shot his father in the head.

Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse says deputies were able to extricate the woman from a bedroom window while the man tried to break down the door.

After speaking to the man on the phone for hours, tear gas was used. Morse says he fired a shotgun at deputies, striking a vehicle they were using for cover, before he eventually surrendered.

Bringing healthcare to the country

Starting next week, the Barton County Health Department will again be bringing flu shot vaccinations to the smaller communities in the county. On Tuesday, department staff will be in Galatia, Olmitz, Albert and Pawnee Rock offering vaccinations before heading to Susank, Beaver, Odin and Claflin on October 3rd. Health Director Shelly Schneider says it’s an effort to offer health care services to county residents who usually have to make the drive into the city to receive their vaccinations.

A Sedgwick County jury deliberated for about an hour Thursday before finding Corbin Breitenbach of Wichita guilty of attempted capital murder, rape, criminal sodomy and burglary.

Witnesses said Breitenbach broke into a west Wichita apartment in June of 2017 where the then-7-year-old girl was staying with her brother and a family friend. Prosecutors say he choked the girl until she was unconscious and then raped her.

Breitenbach, who acted as his own attorney during the trial, was already registered as a sex offender for an aggravated sexual battery case from 2012.

His sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 13.
