Mom to police: Drinking preceded death of baby at Kan. motel

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A woman says she and her boyfriend had been “been drunk for about a week” before one of their 2-month-old twins died in a Wichita motel room where mold and curdled-milk filled bottles were found.

An affidavit was released Tuesday in the case against 39-year-old Christy Rollings and 34-year-old Kyle Kempton. They are charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of Patrick Kempton, who was found dead on Aug. 30 in a motel bed. His twin wasn’t hurt.

Court records say investigators also found several empty liquor bottles in their room and papers for Alcoholics Anonymous.

Police found the couple drunk on Aug. 28 and took the twins to Rollings’ mother. But Rollings picked the babies up the next morning and returned to the hotel.

Pair of hat tricks earns Barton’s Neres week four KJCCC Player of the Week honor

Rayssa Neres

bartonsports.com

Rayssa Neres of the Barton Community College women’s soccer team has been named the week four KJCCC Player of the Week.

The Jayhawk Conference leading attacker continued to wreak havoc on defenses this week, chalking up consecutive hat trick games to raise her season total to twelve in leading Barton to a pair of wins this past week. Breaking free for fourteen shots on frame, the freshman from Brazil netted not only six goals but distributed two early assists in helping Barton get off to a great start Saturday against Dodge City to conclude unblemished week.

The honor is the second consecutive conference honor the Cougars have received as Reyna Gonzalez earned week three’s goalkeeper award.

Most recently the Cougars dispatched Garden City 12-0 Monday to post their third straight shutout in outscoring their opponents 31-0 in the stretch. Now 3-0-1 in Jayhawk play and 4-2-1 overall, Barton winds up their four game home stand stretch on Wednesday in a 2:00 p.m. kick-off hosting Pratt Community College.

Kan. legislators demand answers after child allegedly raped In foster contractor custody

In the wake of rape charge filed in an attack on a 13-year-old girl in the office of a foster care contractor, Kansas lawmakers said Tuesday they’ll investigate what went wrong.

One legislator said state officials and the contractor responsible for watching over the alleged victim will face tough questions later this month.

The case is the latest crisis for a foster care system dogged by criticism in recent years, including the disclosure that kids have had to sleep in the offices of foster care contractors because of a lack of available homes for them.

Now comes the rape case that prosecutors say happened in May in the Johnson County office of KVC Kansas.

KVC said in a statement that one supervisor was overseeing the alleged attacker, the girl who reported the rape and one other young person. That supervisor stepped out of the room for several minutes to get supplies, the contractor said. When the staff member returned, KVC said, the girl said she had been assaulted by an 18-year-old male.

Johnson County authorities have charged Michael Anthony Hamer with rape and indecent liberties.

Republican Rep. Linda Gallagher called the reported sexual assault shocking and disheartening.

“One of the most important things the state must do is to take care of its most vulnerable citizens,” said Gallagher, who is a member of the state’s Child Welfare System Task Force. “We have most certainly failed in that measure.”

Legislators will be investigating, she said. That process will likely start at a meeting of the task force later this month. Gallagher expects pointed questions for Department for Children and Families Secretary Gina Meier-Hummel and KVC Kansas staff.

“Where did the ball get dropped, on the part of KVC, their employees?” she asked. “Where did the ball get dropped, if any, on the part of DCF to oversee this contractor?”

Gallagher said lawmakers will need to gather information before they can respond. That could come during the next legislative session, which starts in January. Gallagher said she would back more funding for better crisis care centers equipped to serve children on short notice.

KVC Kansas said in a statement that a lapse in judgment by the worker left the three young people unsupervised.

“We deeply regret that there was any opportunity — even for a brief moment, as was the case here — for such a tragedy to occur,” the statement reads.

KVC spokeswoman Jenny Kutz said that the worker in question is no longer with the organization and that the contractor has reiterated staffing rules so employees know that children must be supervised at all times.

“We’re doing everything in our power to keep kids safe. We’re confident that we’ve put all the proper guidelines in place that are intended to prevent this from happening again,” she said in an email response to questions from the Kansas News Service.

The agency is holding the contractor responsible, DCF spokeswoman Taylor Forrest said in an email.

“KVC Kansas was cited for regulatory violations and appropriate action was taken,” Forrest said, without specifying the action.

DCF investigated the incident, Forrest said. Her email also noted that the employee in charge during the reported rape is no longer with the organization.

“Through a corrective action plan, investigation and conversations with KVC leadership, DCF has worked extensively with KVC to ensure the safety and security of Kansas youth,” Forrest’s email said.

Panthers edge Hays 2-1

The Great Bend Panther Soccer team picked up a 2-1 victory over Hays Tuesday, the Panthers second straight win over their Western Athletic Conference rival.

Great Bend led 2-0 at halftime thanks to first half goals by Oscar Martinez and Chiny Sanchez. But Hays drew within 2-1 in the second half on a penalty kick and Great Bend would hang on for the victory at Cavanaugh Field.

Great Bend improved to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in WAC play. The Panthers are at home again Thursday as they will host defending WAC champion Dodge City.

Lavarnway drives in winning run, Pirates top Royals in 11

Ryan Lavarnway was an unlikely candidate to get a big hit in a pressure situation for the Pirates.

The 30-year-old fourth-string catcher was playing his 142nd career game, spread out over seven seasons with five teams, and spent most of 2018 with Triple-A Indianapolis.

In his second major league at-bat of the season, Lavarnway drove in the winning run with a pinch-hit single in the 11th inning, giving Pittsburgh a 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals.

Jameson Taillon had a career-high 11 strikeouts and Colin Moran homered for Pittsburgh.

It was the second straight night a backup catcher came through for the Pirates. Jacob Stallings had a game-ending single on Monday night.

Stallings and Lavarnway split catching duties all season in Indianapolis before being called up for depth in September. Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said at the time he wanted to honor the work Lavarnway had done this season.

“This organization has been so great to me,” Lavarnway said. “I’m just so grateful for everything about them, really. I really feel like myself as a person and as a player here.”

Starling Marte led off the 11th with an infield single off Burch Smith (1-6). Josh Bell walked and Burch struck out Francisco Cervelli before Adam Frazier was intentionally walked to load the bases, setting up Lavarnway’s walk-off hit to shallow center.

“I was just trying to not to do much,” Lavarnway said. “I think it would be human nature to try to go up there and hit it into the river.”

Taillon pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing four hits and a walk. His previous career high in strikeouts was 10, set on July 12.

“I worked the top of the strike zone a little bit more than usual, I would say, and then my curveball was the best it’s been the second half,” Taillon said.

It looked like the Royals might get to Taillon in the top of the seventh. With runners on second and third, Brian Goodwin hit a flyball to right fielder Pablo Reyes, who threw out Ryan O’Hearn at the plate.

It was the first outfield assist for Reyes, a rookie playing his second game in right field.

“A great way to end the outing,” Taillon said. “It’s a good feeling.”

Pinch-hitter Hunter Dozier tied the game in the ninth with a double off Pirates closer Felipe Vazquez that scored Jorge Bonifacio. Left fielder Corey Dickerson threw to shortstop Jordy Mercer, who relayed home to throw out Salvador Perez and preserve the tie.

Vazquez had not blown a save since May 31, a string of 24 consecutive opportunities converted.

Kyle Crick (3-2) retired the side on 10 pitches in the 11th to earn the win.

Moran had a pinch-hit home run with two outs in the seventh, his 10th homer this season.

Eric Skoglund allowed three hits and struck out two in six innings, his first start this season in which he did not allow a run. It was his second start since returning from an ankle injury Sept. 7

“He threw the ball great,” manager Ned Yost said. “Six strong innings. Did a really nice job. Got to 67 (pitches) last time out and was starting to get a little tired. Was in the mid-80s this time and felt great. So he’s getting back on track.”

The Pirates improved to 14-5 in interleague play, the second-best record in the majors behind the Boston Red Sox.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Pirates: Frazier did not start but said he was “fine” after fouling a ball off his right knee and leaving Monday’s game with discomfort. He grounded into a fielder’s choice in the ninth and remained in the game in left field. … C Elias Diaz (hamstring) made his first appearance since Aug. 31. He walked as a pinch-hitter in the ninth.

Royals: Perez was a late scratch with a recurrence of a nagging left thumb injury. He singled in the ninth. … RHP Jorge Lopez (bruised rib) has still not thrown a between-starts bullpen session. His next turn in the rotation is Thursday against Detroit. The team has not announced a probable pitcher.

UP NEXT

Royals: Heath Fillmyer (3-1, 4.76 ERA) is scheduled to start the series finale Wednesday. The rookie allowed 10 runs over his previous two starts.

Pirates: Chris Archer (4-8, 4.66 ERA) has lost three straight decisions and is 1-4 with a 5.19 ERA since returning from an abdominal injury in early July.

Lavarnway has played 142 career games with five teams.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Celia Barquin Arozamena was a top amateur golfer from Spain who was finishing her degree at Iowa State University. Collin Daniel Richards was a former inmate from small-town Iowa with a history of violence. Investigators say their contrasting lives intersected in the most violent way when Richards allegedly attacked and stabbed Barquin to death at a golf course on Monday.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas freshman Pooka Williams has already put together back-to-back 100-yard rushing games to start his college football career. More importantly, those two big games have helped the Jayhawks to their first two-game winning streak in seven years. The emerging star from Boutte, Louisiana, will try to keep the momentum going when Big 12 play starts with a trip to Baylor.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — No. 17 TCU is focused on Big 12 play that could put Horned Frogs in the playoff conversation even after that loss to Ohio State. Coach Gary Patterson says it won’t matter how people view the loss to the Buckeyes if the Frogs don’t win their conference games. TCU opens Big 12 play Saturday at Texas. The Frogs have won four consecutive games in the series.

National Headlines

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings have signed kicker Dan Bailey as the replacement for rookie Daniel Carlson, who missed field goal attempts of 48, 49 and 35 yards in Sunday’s 29-29 tie at Green Bay. Bailey is the second-most-accurate field goal kicker in NFL history at more than 88 percent, hitting 186 of 211 attempts. He was released by the Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 1.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Chargers defensive tackle Corey Liuget has sued the trainer who he says is responsible for his four-game suspension for using a performance-enhancing substance. Liuget filed suit against Ian Danney and his Arizona-based business in Los Angeles, asking for a jury trial and no less than $15 million in damages. The suit says Danney injected Liuget with a substance banned by the FDA and the NFL.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Colorado Rockies are hoping All-Star shortstop Trevor Story can return to the lineup in a few days. Story left Monday’s game with inflammation in his right elbow, but a subsequent exam showed no structural damage. He is batting .288 with 33 home runs and 102 RBIs, all career highs.

PHOENIX (AP) — Chicago Cubs closer Brandon Morrow will be shut down for the rest of the year because of an injured right elbow that has been slow to heal. Morrow has 22 saves and a 1.47 earned run average in 35 appearances this season. The announcement comes a week after Chicago reliever Pedro Strop suffered a hamstring injury that is causing him to miss the rest of the regular season.

MIAMI (AP) — Miami Heat guard Dion Waiters will begin this season on the sidelines as he continues his recovery from left ankle surgery. Waiters underwent the procedure in mid-January and was expected to be sidelined for up to 10 months. Waiters averaged 14.3 points in 30 games last season but shot only 31 percent from 3-point range, nine percent worse than he did in 2016-17.
