Probation for man on Ellis County child sex charges

By Jonathan Zweygardt

A Kansas man was sentenced to two years of probation Monday after pleading guilty earlier this year to sex crimes related to a child.

Edward L McElhaney, 53, was sentenced in Ellis County District Monday to 24 months of probation for aggravated battery and 12 months for sexual battery in connection with an incident that occurred in March.

The two sentences will run concurrently for a total of two years’ probation to be served with Community Corrections.

McElhaney was originally charged with aggravated indecent liberties with a child but pleaded to the lesser charges in July.

He was accused of inappropriately touching the victim when the child slept.

McElhaney maintained his innocence through the process and address the court Monday saying it was all a, “misunderstanding.”

His wife and the mother of the victim also addressed the court Monday on his behalf.

McElhaney will also be required to register as sex offender for life.

Lady Cougars take down Garden City in three sets

bartonsports.com

Following a nine day layoff, the Barton Community College volleyball team shook off a rusty start Monday evening at the Barton Gym to complete a “Military Appreciation Night” sweep of Garden City Community College (25-20, 25-16, and 25-12).

The victory improved Barton to 3-1 in Jayhawk Conference play and 8-7 on the year while keeping Garden City winless on the year at 0-5 in league play and 0-16 overall. Next up for the Cougars is a Wednesday trip to Colby Community College for a 6:30 p.m. first serve against the unblemished 4-0 and 13-0 Trojans.

A four point mid-set run gained the Cougars separation in the opening frame but the Broncbusters climbed back to within one before another four straight points wrapped up the win.

Garden City controlled the early part of the second set as Barton was a little out of sync as the gritty Broncbusters held a 13-8 edge. Making a change in the lineup, one of Head Coach Brandon Stephenson’s chess moves was bringing in sophomore Kaila Harris off the bench to run the offense in a momentum changing adjustment. Harris immediately went for a dink kill to find the open space in the Broncbuster defense to stop a 5-0 run and kick-start the Barton offense. The Cougars went on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a pair of thunderous Kate Deterding floor punishers and Barton was off and running. Garden City would grab a point to tie it back up at fifteen but another 6-0 spurt and capped by a four point close-out sealed the nine point margin.

Another sophomore stepped up in the third set as the attack and two service aces by Laine Alves keyed a 5-of-6 point stretch that seemed to deflate the Broncbusters with the Cougars again closing out strong with the match’s final five points.

At one point the team’s point tally was 33 points each but following the insertion of Harris to reignite the offense, the Cougars outscored Garden City 42-15 the rest of the way.

Barton’s win kept the record clean against the Broncbusters at 38-0 in the series including a 14-0 record at the Barton Gym.

Teen charged with rape at Kansas child welfare office

OLATHE, Kan. (AP) — An 18-year-old has been charged with sexually assaulting a 13-year-old at a suburban Kansas City child welfare office where children have been kept overnight because of a shortage of beds.

Michael Anthony Hamer was charged last week with rape and aggravated indecent liberties of a child. Bond is set at $500,000. His attorney didn’t immediately respond to a message from The Associated Press.

Kansas lawmakers and child advocates have been raising concerns for months about keeping children overnight in child welfare contractors’ offices.

Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe says authorities have dealt with many troublesome issues at the KVC Behavioral Healthcare office in Olathe, where the rape was reported in May.

KVC spokeswoman Jenny Kutz says the agency takes “this situation very seriously.”

GBHS debate team kicks off season at Halstead tournament

Back row left to right: Isaiah Smith, Patrick Heath, Natalie Bayona, Daniel Abbott, Geoffrey
Pafford, Robby Brining, C.J. Gibson
Middle Row l to r: Dalton Ruble, Bayle Sandy, Citraly Torres, Tia Mitchell, Skylar
Fletcher, Malachi Wasson
Front: Paige Byerly

The coach is different, but the success is familiar as twelve Great Bend High School debaters traveled to Halstead on Saturday to compete in the first debate tournament of the 2018 season.

“I was really impressed with our debaters, particularly our novices, most of whom had never even seen a round of debate,” said Kim Heath, first year debate coach at GBHS, “we finished in 4th place out 16 schools. It was awesome to see our kids start the season so strong.”

Heath has taken over for Barbara Watson who retired from Great Bend High School at the end of last year.

“Our topic this year is immigration,” said Heath, “with all of the press this topic is getting lately, our debaters have really begun to see the real-world implications of the arguments they are making in the debate rounds.”

Leading the Panther Debate squad at Halstead were Geoffrey Pafford and Daniel Abbott who finished in 8th place with a 4-1 record. Pafford is a 4th year debater and Abbott, although a junior, has never debated before this year.

“I was so proud of Daniel and Geoffrey. For them to go 4-1 at Daniel’s first ever tournament is a testament to both the potential of Daniel and the leadership of Geoffrey. I am really excited to see how they develop throughout the season,” said Heath.

The other experienced duo on this year’s squad is Bayle Sandy and Patrick Heath, both third-year debaters. Sandy and Heath went 3-2 on the day, but faced some of the toughest competition the tournament had to offer. The duo defeated the eventual tournament champs from Sterling, lost to the 2nd and 3rd place teams, and defeated the 4th place team.

“Rarely does a team face all four of the top medal winners in a tournament,” said Coach Heath. “Their 3-2 record is amazing, considering the talent they were facing in every round.”

In the novice division, the team of C.J. Gibson and Robby Brining placed 8th out of 26 teams from 16 schools, winning 3 rounds and dropping 2. Also going 3-2 was the team of Skylar Fletcher and Malachi Wasson. Other novices competing included the team of Paige Byerly and Tia Mitchell going 2-3 and the team of Isaiah Smith and Dalton Ruble who finished 1-4.

Attending the tournament, but not debating was the team of Natalie Bayona and Citraly Torres. The novices will next debate on Tuesday at Ellinwood and both experienced and novice debaters will travel to Hays High on September 29.
