Former Dallas Cowboy charged with rape, kidnapping in Kansas

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Former Dallas Cowboys running back Joseph Randle has been charged with rape in Wichita.

Randle

Randle was charged Tuesday with two counts of rape, two counts of aggravated kidnapping, seven counts of aggravated criminal sodomy and one count of aggravated battery. He also was charged with a probation violation. His probation was revoked in two other cases.

Randle was arrested Friday after police were called to an apartment complex, where a 28-year-old woman said Randle had sexually assaulted her.

A judge set his bond at $500,000 and ordered Randle back in court Sept. 27.

Randle has been arrested numerous times in the last several years. He was sentenced to probation in June for a fight at a house party in February 2016.

Half of Great Bend High School graduates enrolling in post-secondary education

In order to stay accredited, school districts throughout Kansas have to meet standards from the Kansas State Department of Education. The state measures districts’ state assessment scores, graduation rates, kindergarten readiness, and postsecondary progress.

The State wants to see how many graduated seniors finish a year in college the following year and enroll in college classes the second year. This is known as the effective rate.

USD 428 Assistant Superintendent John Popp says the data is collected by the National Clearing House.

Since the data takes two years to track, the latest information is from 2016. Great Bend High School had an 82.3% graduation rate in 2016, with 49.3% finishing their first year in college the next year, and 40.6% of those students enrolling for a second year.

While KSDE wants the graduation rates in Kansas to be 95% and second year enrollment in college percentage between 70%-75%, the expectations from the state for Great Bend’s effective rate is 35%-37% based on demographics.

The data collected gathers information on students completing certificates or enrolling in vocational schools, but does not track students that enter the workforce immediately after high school.

Kan. officials back Trump’s changes for biodefense lab

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas officials are backing President Donald Trump’s plan to switch federal agency control of a biodefense laboratory complex under construction in the state.

The National Bio- and Agro-Defense Facility is currently controlled by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Federal and state officials say the $1.25 billion project in Manhattan will aid efforts to prepare for agro-terrorism and research how to protect the country’s food supply.

Trump this year proposed handing over operational control of the facility to the U.S. Department of Agriculture as part of his budget plan. The idea brought some concern, but federal officials and Kansas lawmakers on Monday supported the bureaucratic changeover.

Construction on the facility is about two-thirds complete. The facility is expected begin operating in 2022 or 2023.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — The head of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security toured the National Agro-Defense Facility that is under construction in Manhattan.

Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen visited the facility Monday with a host of federal and state leaders. They include U.S. Sens. Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran, U.S. Reps. Roger Marshall and Kevin Yoder, Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer and Kansas State President Richard Myers.

The $1.25 billion research facility, or NBAF, will study diseases that can be spread from animals to humans. The facility is expected to open in 2022.

Air Show and racing events expected to draw huge crowds

Great Bend’s population was already expected to rise for the weekend of September 28-30 thanks to the 2018 Airfest event at the Great Bend Airport, along with the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, and the Hahn Brothers Supercross Shootout. Now it will get even bigger. SRCA President Hank Denning announced last week that the Tri-State Raceway Lucas Oil Series scheduled for Earlville, Iowa has been moved to Great Bend.

So now the SRCA dragstrip will host two Lucas Oil events on the same weekend. Denning says that means race fans in Great Bend will get to see a different class of dragsters competing, and even more racers flocking to the city making for one huge race weekend.

Hank Denning Audio

Great Bend Community Coordinator and CVB Director Christina Hayes says the large crowds expected for Airfest and the racing events will stretch the city’s resources to the max with motel rooms expected to be at a premium during the entire week.

There will be separate gate fees for the three different events. For Airfest, admission will be $10 per person per day with kids under 12 admitted free. Three day passes will be available for $25.
