Royals win on wild throw in 10th, beat White Sox 4-3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A little bunt by Alcides Escobar paid off big for the Kansas City Royals.

White Sox reliever Jeanmar Gomez threw away Escobar’s bunt in the 10th inning Monday night, giving the Royals a 4-3 win over Chicago.

Brian Goodwin led off the Kansas City 10th with a sharp double. Escobar followed with a sacrifice and Gomez (0-2) made a wild toss over third baseman Yolmer Sanchez, letting the speedy Goodwin score easily.

“Goodwin is a good runner, and he was safe anyway,” Escobar said. “If (Gomez) made a good throw, he was safe anyway.”

“I knew I needed to move the runner to third base, and I made a good bunt. The pitcher went to third base, and, game over.”

White Sox manager Rich Renteria wasn’t so sure Goodwin would have been safe with a good throw.

“It looked like he recognized the play was available to him and he just got a little flustered, probably a little excited and just didn’t make a very good throw,” he said.

Jake Newberry (2-0) pitched a perfect top of the 10th to notch the win.

Whit Merrifield homered on the first pitch from White Sox starter Lucas Giolito. Ryan O’Hearn hit a solo homer in the sixth that made it 3-all — he connected against Chicago in his big league debut on July 31, and now has 10 home runs in 30 games.

“I’m not thinking about numbers or anything like that,” O’Hearn said. “I just go out there every day and try to have quality at-bats. The home runs keep piling up. Hopefully, I’ll keep on going.”

Adam Engel and Daniel Palka each homered in the Chicago third against Jakob Junis.

“They were throwing me heaters the first AB and start of the second and I think they noticed me diving over the plate a little bit and missing,” Palka said of his drive just inside the foul pole. “I just kind of stayed back on the one I got. It was a pretty good pitch, just right where I was looking.”

Jose Abreu, activated from the disabled list prior to the game, had three hits for the White Sox. He was put on the DL on Aug. 22 following surgery for testicular torsion.

Junis went eight innings, allowing seven hits. He faced the minimum after giving up Palka’s homer, and has a 2.15 ERA in his last seven starts. He wasn’t fazed by the rough third inning.

“We didn’t really change our game plan,” Junis said. “We stayed aggressive, kept pounding the strike zone. We got some quick outs that way.”

Giolito pitched seven innings for his fifth quality start in his last six outings.

Merrifield hit his third leadoff homer this season and the Royals added another run in the second after a couple of unusual plays.

With a runner on second, Goodwin hit a slow dribbler up the third base line that appeared to be headed foul, but Sanchez touched the ball in fair territory and resulted in an infield hit. Escobar followed with a blooper to right field, and a run scored while Goodwin was thrown out at second.

TRAINER’S ROOM

White Sox: RHP Nate Jones is close to returning from the 60-day disabled list. He has been on the DL since June 24 with a muscle strain in his arm.

Royals: Manager Ned Yost said that RHP Ian Kennedy has only the “normal pitching soreness” following his first appearance since June 23. Kennedy went six innings Sunday in Minnesota. He gave up one run on four hits. … OF Brett Phillips, out since Sept. 5 with a bruised shoulder, took 30 swings off the tee. He said he can swing without pain, but the follow-through causes him to tighten up. There is no timetable for his return.

UNDATED (AP) — Iowa State quarterback Kyle Kempt is considered “day-to-day” with a knee injury and it is unknown whether he will play Saturday against No. 5 Oklahoma. Coach Matt Campbell says Kempt injured the MCL in his left knee in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s 13-3 loss to Iowa. He says the injury is not considered a long-term issue and the Cyclones dodged a “big bullet.” The game will be the Big 12 opener for both the Cyclones, who are 0-1, and the Sooners, who are 2-0.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma has lost star running back Rodney Anderson for the season. The fifth-ranked Sooners have quality depth at the position. Trey Sermon, Marcelias Sutton, Kennedy Brooks and T.J. Pledger are ready to fill the void heading into this weekend’s game at Iowa State.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — After No. 24 Oklahoma State lost multiple senior receivers, most observers didn’t think much of the Cowboys’ group of inexperienced wideouts this year. But Tylan Wallace and Tyron Johnson among others have proven to be almost as dynamic as their predecessors so far. Both had career-high days in Saturday’s 55-13 victory over South Alabama. Wallace amassed 10 receptions for 166 yards and one touchdown, while Johnson hauled in five passes for 137 yards.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — Rutgers freshman quarterback Art Sitkowski is feeling better and coach Chris Ash expects him to play this Saturday against Kansas. Sitkowski hurt his right shoulder in Saturday’s 52-3 loss at No. 4 Ohio State when sacked by Nick Bosa in the waning seconds of the first half.

Keselowski finished 0.9 seconds ahead of Erik Jones, with Hamlin finishing third.

Prosecutors say the Uber driver, a 30-year-old man, told police the man grabbed the driver’s crotch or tried to grab his genitals about a dozen times.

The driver told police each time he told the man to stop, the passenger became agitated and angry, which made the driver fear for his life.

2 arrested after high-speed chase in Russell, Lincoln counties

RUSSELL — Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on numerous charges after a high-speed chase. At approximately 10:48 p.m. Saturday, a Russell County Deputy observed a vehicle driving around the football field in Lucas. The Deputy attempted to stop the blue Ford Mustang bearing a Kansas temporary plate, according to a media release from the sheriff’s department.

Zachary A.Packard

The driver of the vehicle refused to yield and fled. The pursuit led through the city of Lucas before turning east onto K-18. The driver of the Mustang fled east on K-18 at speeds over 100 mph and eventually turned south on Highway 181 in Lincoln County. The pursuit went through Sylvan Grove and proceeded south on Highway 181 to the 209 exit at Interstate 70.

Another Russell County Deputy successfully deployed stop sticks at this location, flattening one of the vehicles tires. The driver of the Mustang turned east on I-70 and continued to flee for another few miles. The driver finally pulled over in the area of the 212 Mile Marker on I-70. The driver and passenger were both taken into custody at that location without further incident and transported to the Russell County jail for booking.

Darian R. Vanmeter

The driver was identified as 23-year-old Zachary A. Packard of Salina. Packard’s initial Russell County charges include Felony Flee and Elude, Reckless Driving, Driving while Revoked, Possession of Meth, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Packard is also being held on a Kansas Department of Corrections Parole Violation warrant.

The passenger of the vehicle was identified as 20-year-old Darian R. Vanmeter of Salina. Initial charges for Vanmeter include Possession of Meth and Possession of Marijuana.

“The Russell County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Lincoln and Ellsworth County Sheriff’s Offices, the Kansas Highway Patrol, and the Lucas Fire Department for their assistance in bringing this pursuit to an end without injury or property damage,” Sheriff Fred J. Whitman said in a social media release.

Kansas board rejects challenge to Kobach’s bid for governor

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — An all-Republican state board on Monday rejected a liberal Kansas activist’s challenge to Secretary of State Kris Kobach’s listing as the GOP nominee for governor on the November ballot after he argued that hundreds of legal votes were not counted in the primary election.

The State Objections Board concluded that Davis Hammet, of Topeka, could not show that Kobach’s narrow victory over Gov. Jeff Colyer in the GOP primary could be overturned by the issues Hammet raised. It also rejected Hammet’s argument that Kobach’s chief deputy should not have been involved in reviewing the challenge.

Kobach defeated Colyer by 343 votes out of more than 317,000 cast. Colyer’s supporters initially raised some of the same questions Hammet did in his objection, but the governor conceded the race a week after the primary.

“It is not merely that an objection has been made for one of the appropriate grounds. You also must present evidence that this election would be overturned,” said Assistant Secretary of State Eric Rucker, who presided over the board’s meeting.

But Hammet said later that he couldn’t show that Kobach’s victory might be overturned because counties wouldn’t give him information about voters whose ballots were not counted. Also, he said, counties aren’t consistent in how they report the number of rejected ballots. He did not rule out filing a lawsuit.

“None of my objections were addressed,” Hammet said. “They just ignored every single argument I made.”

Hammet is the founder and president of a voting rights group, Loud Light, and has frequently been critical of Kobach, other Republicans and their policies.

Kobach’s campaign was represented at the hearing by Mike Roman, a former special assistant to President Donald Trump, who endorsed Kobach the day before the primary. Kobach advised Trump’s presidential campaign and has advised the White House; the Kansas secretary of state also served as vice chairman of Trump’s now-disbanded commission on election fraud.

Roman argued that Hammet did not have the right under Kansas law to file an objection to Kobach’s nomination because Hammet is a registered Democrat and cannot legally vote in the Republican primary.

“I really don’t think he has standing,” Roman said.

The board rejected Roman’s argument, based on previous cases, but Hammet criticized members for even considering the issue. He also argued that Rucker shouldn’t have been involved in reviewing the objection because he’s Kobach’s top deputy and a past contributor to Kobach’s campaigns.

Kansas law says objections like Hammet’s are reviewed by a board made up of the secretary of state, the attorney general and lieutenant governor, or their representatives. Rucker was Kobach’s substitute on the board, and the other two officials sent substitutes as well.

Hammet argued that someone outside Kobach’s office should have replaced Kobach on the board, instead of Rucker.

Board members said there’s nothing in state law allowing the officials to appoint representatives outside their offices to serve on the board.

But Hammet replied: “This is a ridiculous board in need of reform.”
