FLORENCE ETHEL JONAS
1923-2015
Ethel Jonas, 91 died April 20, 2015 at Hays Medical Center. She was born in Barton County, Kansas near Susank on June 1, 1923. She was the second child of Lora Retta (Gardner) Jonas and Edmund “Edd” G. Jonas. Her brother, Walter was born in 1920. He passed away in 2005.
The family moved to Hoisington in 1926 where Edd worked as a blacksmith for the Missouri-Pacific Railroad. They bought a house on west Broadway and Ethel lived there continuously for the next 88 years. She graduated from Hoisington High School, was a member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Hoisington, cared for her elderly parents and worked on the flat iron mangle at the Hoisington Suburban Laundry for 30 years retiring in 1992. She moved to Cherry Village Residential Living Center in 2013.
As a life time resident of Hoisington, she enjoyed a close knit circle of friends and relatives. Ethel is survived by two nieces, Nancy Jonas Stichman & husband Dan of Lancaster, California and Janetha Jonas Sander and husband, Wayne of North Stonington, CT, 1 great niece and 3 great nephews.
She is also survived by cousins, Edith Gardner Grogan of Garland, Texas, Brenda Perkins of Garland, Texas, Betty Smith of Hoisington and other extended family members.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 23, 2015, at Hillcrest Cemetery, with Rev. Joshua Leu presiding. Friends may call 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, with family to receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thursday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home.
