Bruce N. Furrey Jr.BRUCE  N.  FURREY,  JR.

Bruce N. Furrey, Jr., age 47 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away on Thursday evening, June 16, 2016 in Great Bend.  Bruce was born on October 9, 1968 at Great Bend, Kansas, and was an employee of and resident at Sunflower Diversified Services in Great Bend for many years.  Bruce was a 38-year ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) survivor.

Bruce lived in Great Bend all of his life and attended school here.  He was a very spirited young man and kept his surroundings lively whether it be in his group home with staff and roommates, at work, or at one of their dances.  He loved about anyone.  Before his disease prevented him, Bruce loved to write stories and was very good at it.  He would draw his own illustrations and even make up a language for his characters.  He had an imagination that amazed all that knew him.

Bruce is survived by his parents, Bruce and Carol Furrey of Great Bend, Kansas; his sisters:  Rachell (and her husband, JD) Davis of Crete, Nebraska, Lisa (and her husband, Bobby) Funk of Otis, Kansas and his step-sister, Laurie (and her husband, Doug) Linsner of Great Bend, Kansas; three nephews:  Alex (and his wife, Jacquelyn) Armstrong, and Luke and Jayden Martin; four nieces:  Shaila (and her husband, Tyler) Jones, Sierra and Shyanne Davis, and Megan Keener.  He also leaves six great-nieces and great-nephews, many aunts, uncles, and cousins, and his biological mother, Rose Willard of Great Bend, Kansas.  He was preceded in death by one niece, two aunts and two uncles, two cousins, and grandparents on both his father’s and mother’s side.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Bruce’s life will be held at 7:00 PM on Monday Evening, June 20, 2016 at Charter Funerals in Great Bend, Kansas with Pastor Sandy Kennedy officiating.  According to Bruce’s wishes, cremation has been chosen.  Bruce would have wanted everyone that attends his Memorial Celebration to be comfortable so there is no need to dress up.  Please come with your favorite stories and memories of this wonderful young man.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in care of Sunflower Diversified Services of Great Bend, Kansas or The Lawrence R. Barnett ALS Research Council.  Online condolences may be left for the family and a complete obituary may be viewed at https://www.charterfunerals.com/locations/great-bend.php.
